Today I got approved for disability. But I'm not sure how much I will get. How do they decide how much to give you? Also how do you deal with the people who think you shouldn't be on it?

I've been on disability for almost 2 years. I have told very few people that I am on it. I have friends who have figured it out but none of them have asked why I was getting it. The people who have a problem with me not working are also the ones who think I'm making it up and that I am lazy. I try to remind myself of how many people are turned down for disability and the struggles that the system puts them thru and I think that if I am bad enough to convince someone who is trying to deny me then it must be true and that helps me to ignore the negative people.

As far as how much.... I don't remember how it is calculated but you can log into Social Security and that can give you estimates and the real numbers once they are posted. Below is the link to the log in page. Hope it helps.

Find out what you would get if you retired with a full SS check. That is what you will get on.SSDI. This is how it worked out for me.

I am not sure of the answer to your question but I just wanted to say I am glad that everything was sorted out.

The amount your will receive is based on what your income was while working averaged out, they have a specific way to calculate it.

You will get all the info in the mail , showing the amount and when you will receive it monthly.

As for telling anyone you are on it? Well that is up to you. Other than my Husband, Daughter and a couple friends I choose to keep it to myself. Don't ever feel pressured to discuss it. If someone keeps pressing you, Just look at them and give a long blink and say " Wow I can't believe you are asking such personal questions" and change the topic.

Being on disability is nothing to be ashamed of. Its a difficult process as I am sure you know.

Take care

How much you will get depends on whether you were approved for SSDI or SSI. I think the max monthly amount you get from SSI is around $795.00. For the SSDI amount check your yearly Social Security statement or wait until you get your award letter. Also, depending on the date you were found disabled you may be entitled to back pay...which can be a considerable amount.

I've been on disability (SSDI) for just over a year now. When asked the dreaded question "so, what do you do?" I tell people "I'm gainfully unemployed"...it usually confuses them or catches them off guard and it quickly (although awkwardly) changes the subject.

Congratulations on your approval...I know it's not an easy journey.
