I was once told (I have had 4 pdocs in 5 years - they all leave and go to work for a company) that I have Bipolar 2.

Just switched from Cymbalta to Wellbutrin for the depression. Thought it was ok at first, but the deep dark hole of depression started again this past weekend.

Now, I haven't slept at all for two nights, and Monday night only slept about 4 hours. (I normally need 7-8 hours)

I also take Klonopin and Neurontin at night, I guess to help sleep. Well, I'm groggy from taking those, but no sign of sleep ahead.

Is this possibly a manic episode, or just a bad reaction to Wellbutrin?

I also started itching last night to the point I had to take Benadryl (which should also make you sleepy). Itching stopped.

Called pdoc first thing this morning - he still hasn't called me back. Don't know if I can go another night without sleep, don't know if I should take Wellbutrin today or not.

This is awful. You take SSRI antidepressants, and you have all of these side effects - heaving sweating, weight gain, no desire for sex. You try something else, and you cannot even function. You kind of feel like "is it really worth all this"? Not suicidal, just frustrated and feeling a bit hopeless.

Any ideas - manic or reaction to meds? Thanks.

Hello (((AB))). I am sorry you are having such a hard time with meds at this time. If the DR does not call back soon go to your local Emergency room for treatment to check the reaction that you are having from the meds and get something that can help you sleep hopefully. I hope things turn out okay for you soon. Take care of yourself. soidhonia

Thank you! He finally called me back, I'm tossing the Wellbutrin for today and tomorrow and seeing him on Friday. I guess we're going to start with something else then.

He is going on vacation next week, which makes me somewhat nervous.

How long will he be on vacation for? Will he provide you with a backup pdoc you can call? When switching meds or dosages I would want someone to call if I think I'm having a reaction.--Suzy

I'm going to ask him tomorrow - he is in practice with another pdoc, so hopefully I can call him if need be.

He is on vacation until next Thursday. I have an appointment anyway that day, but it is just bad timing (for me - he deserves a vacation!)

Very irritable today. At least I slept for 9 hours last night though - thank God!

For me, wellbutrin was hell for the first 2 weeks. But after that hump, it has helped me quite a lot.

I thought the Wellbutrin was going to be great. I got past the three weeks of stomach upset. Then, the big black hole of depression started to set in. Three days later it was insomnia. The last day I itched over my entire body. It had to be the Wellbutrin because I stopped it yesterday and actually slept for 8 hours, and stopped itching.

It's too bad though. I guess it just isn't right for me. I think I must need the SSRIs.

Sorry the wellbutrin didn't work - did you talk to your doc about dosage? I hadn't seen in this post how much you were taking...

300 mg. - even went back down to 150, but was still itching and could not sleep.

Going back on Cymbalta - trying a lower dosage - 30 mg. (may go up to 60mg. if needed). Was on 90 mg. before. Feel much better yesterday and today (just took my first Cymbalta).

I'm bummed too. I think the dopamine was causing me to have too much anxiety as well.

it sounds like you had a little reaction to the welbutrin and maybe possibly some mania since you couldn't sleep. hope you feel better i hate the dips in to the deep abyss. -onyx
