I was just out with friends who saw the Madonna show a couple weeks ago, and they said that she said "I won't say I'm Schizophrenic, because then you won't respect me. And I won't say I'm Bipolar, because that would be bad." Apparently she sat down and said this as part of a monologue to the audience. They said there were people booing, which is good. But seriously, wtf? How ignorant! I don't know if there will be any backlash, but I really hope so.

Madonna needs to talk to Demi Lovato. She'd straighten that woman out in five minutes.

Madonna has been controversial since the 80's. She likes to stay in the limelight.

It could also be a statement about how much it is used.

I found mention of it in an article but I won't post the link because it might disclose your location.

I don't know what she meant by saying that but maybe she's been Googling herself!

Madonna , IMHO, does have a mental illness. I wouldn't say she's bipolar nor would I call it schizophrenia. I just think she's a good candidate for a poster child for NPD. I have always thought of her as a narcissist.

Okay, now that I think about it, maybe she isn't so much a narcissist or someone on the NPD spectrum. Maybe she is, but after re- reading the description for histrionic personality disorder, I wonder if that may actually fit her better. She's always about attention seeking behavior right down to the things that come out her mouth and the way she dresses. She only seems to be comfortable when she's the center of attention and her behavior fluctuates according to whatever brings her closer to being the center of attention. So, I'm curious... If anyone else is up to it or just bored enough, please look up the descriptions for NPD and HPD and tell me what you think. (Besides I'm playing armchair psychiatrist which I really need to stop doing now). Lol

Isn't it possible she said these things as a statement about how mental illnesses are already stigmatized, how none of us can be open about what we're dealing with, without being judged? Because to be honest, that's what it sounds like to me.

I'm not saying it was necessarily the best choice of words, or that it will be amenable to everyone, but I am saying it was likely well intended and not malicious. Artists are disruptors, there to open up conversations and not shut them down. Art and activism often feed off each other, but not always by working in tandem.

I'm familiar with both NPD and HPD but not enough with her behavior (stuff she says in interviews and whatnot, going a little deeper than her cone-bra image) to tell which one she is. They both are attention-seeking and the whole world revolves around them.

I've read comments on online UK newspapers and it seems like the Brits absolutely hate her.

Yeah, it's possible. I just don't like her. So I'm being a bit judgmental I guess.

All I know is when I hear Madonna stigmatizing my violent bipolar disorder, I get so angry that I want to pick up a plumber's snake and do the whole village. Whoops.

Madonna stigmatizes mental illness

"they said that she said "I won't say I'm Schizophrenic, because then you won't respect me. And I won't say I'm Bipolar, because that would be bad." Apparently she sat down and said this as part of a monologue to the audience"

The words "they said" and "Apparently" in the above statement makes me a bit wary. Was that really how she put it? Was she being ironic? Was it taken out of context? I don't always trust media when refering to what a celeb said or did not say. Just as I don't always trust what someone relates to me about what happened at an event I was not present at. That said, it does sound like what she said was offensive enough to make the crown boo her. So it migth very well be so.
I must say I don't really spend a lot of time following Madonnas doings, and I don't know much about her opinions. Nevertheless I am aware that she has a huge fan-base, and she is a public figure because of her fame. And celebs should be a bit more thougthful about what they are putting into the minds of their followers. To say something like that is really offensive, and I think she is smart enough to know that. Whatever her reason for expressing an opinion like that is beyond me. And yes, who knows, maybe she did it to get a bit of limeligth on herself. Or maybe she really holds the opinion that MI = "bad". She is clearly a person who does not shy away from controversy. that is clear from her career so far at least. She comes across as an extremely driven, amitious and high-acheiving woman. Not sure if that means that she has a mental issue. But people like that are often not the most sensitive nor pleasant people...

Madonna is just trying to imply that she has mental illness without actually saying it. She probably thinks having an MI will allow her to connect with a larger audience. She's a phony, always trying to have it both ways, never committing to a story.

All the more reason why I love Jared Padalecki and the rest of the cast of Supernatural. They have all been working so hard to reduce the stigma of mental illness, and support charities like To Write Love on Her Arms and Additudes in Reverse.

Not the media, the they I'm referring to was my brother and his wife. I wasn't at the show, so i didn't hear it, but i trust their interpretations. But right to be skeptical of media. They didn't think it was anything nuanced like trying to make a statement, they thought it was straight up ignorance. But i wasn't there directly

Yes, you are, honestly.

She is not attention *****, she is a businesswoman and knows how to make money. She IS a product, it is about selling herself... and she knows how to attract attention that can be turned into business thing.

I want to hear about the whole context of the statement before I jump on conclusions.

Maybe cause I like Madonna and followed her a lot and she has not been a judgemental person. She spoke up for stigmatized groups of people before.

Maybe we are looking at this from the wrong angle. Maybe she was highlighting the stigma that is attached to MH issues
