I got worse over time with my bipolar diagnosis, I suggest you all take your pills and get some therapy and clean up your life style. It may seem bad now, it gets worse over time. If you have a bipolar I diagnosis and you don't start taking responsibility for your life, it may worsen to the extremes, until you get the end of the line diagnosis.
Your doctor can't live your life, the pills don't make you weak, your denial that you don't need them does. |

Why are you assuming that we aren't doing those things? I mean, welcome to the board but if you hang around you'll find most of us are quite committed to treatment in whatever form that takes for us.
I don't know what you mean by an end of the line diagnosis. I would suspect that you are talking about someone like me. I have reached the end of the possible meds and am going on the last resort, last med I can really try, in a few weeks. But that's not because I didn't do what I should, it's because I have a severe form of bipolar that doesn't respond well to meds. Like I said, maybe get to know us a bit first? This is a very caring, understanding place with a lot of people fighting to have the best possible lives however they have to do that.

I feel for you, I kind of wish my diagnosis went back to bipolar I, you sound like you're strong and are up for the challenge

Thanks for the reminder, Wally. I know my BP has progressed, I'm being hospitalized more frequently, needing a lot more supports than before, and I usually take the medications. There's a lot I need to do to clean up my life, like eat better, sleep better, etc... it's my responsibility to try not to let this get worse.

I don't need pill personaly. It's not denial, I gotten better with hard work. I work two jobs, I'm fully commited activitist/humanitarian, have friends. My account is constantly in black numbers.
Taking pills and taking responsibility are two different things. I am all for responsibility and cleaning up your lifestyle... but I am against the idea EVERY SINGLE BIPOLAR NEEDS MEDS FOR LIFE.

Oh ya you bet. Learning it the hard way sux! I went unmedicated for a longtime. all though I read somewhere that the older you get, the manic symptoms fade away and it's more depression. I haven't seen it yet.
I'm a pill lifer...bipolar triggers all my other conditions. |

I've gotten worse over time too.
Not everyone needs meds of course. A lot of us do though. It just depends. I don't plan on being on meds the rest of my life. But if I need to that's okay too.

I've managed to make it through 40 some years without meds for my bipolar, but I've gotten so bad I'm at the cusp of going into the hospital. I've just stayed therapy and lithium to help and I'm really hoping i can get some relief.
Some people can control their symptoms through lifestyle, others can't, but i think the last thing any of us needs is a judgement about how we are handling our bp. Just being here and knowing there are people that understand has been a lifesaver for me. Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk

My bipolar has definitely gotten worse as I've aged. Fortunately I've found the right combination of meds and have been stable for almost a year. Now it feels like that bipolar diagnosis seems long ago and far away, but I know better than to ignore it!

The bipolar may worsen to a diagnosis of schizoaffective and maybe schizophrenia. It may get so severe that you are psychotic all the time with negative symptoms and disabled

Or it might not. It may get better. You are free to share your experience, but please use "I" when talking about them and don't generalize. You don't know any of the people here personally, so you don't know what "may" happen to them. And this post just seems to be unnecessarily negative and fear mongering.

Thank you Venuss for saying what I wasn't able to articulate very well.
Also, bipolar cannot turn into schizophrenia or schizoaffective. The diagnosis may change and there are people diagnosed with bipolar and schizophrenia (although they probably really should be diagnosed with schizoaffective) but the disorder is whatever it is and if you are diagnosed first with bipolar and then later with schizophrenia or schizoaffective that just means your diagnosis changed to reflect what they are seeing at the present time. Sure symptoms get worse and make those things more clear but nothing changes but the words used to describe what is already occurring. And honestly diagnosis can be so subjective....I was taught that schizoaffective was a severe enough disorder that people would not be able to function without a great deal of support but on this board there are people with schizoaffective doing much better than I am. Diagnosis is not always equal from dr to dr. But the only thing bipolar can worsen into is worse bipolar.
