I've been on Lithium for about 3 months now and have experienced minimal side effects so far. However, for the past 10 days or so I've been experiencing a painful, sharp sensation in my stomach (sort of in my upper intestines, just below where the sternum begins). It's like a stabbing pain that lasts for 30-60 seconds and it occurs probably 15-20 times per day (on average).

Has anyone else experienced this while on lithium? It feels almost like a tennis ball sized cramp .... nothing debilitating but enough to make me very uncomfortable, especially when in a sitting position.

My diet is pretty good and I haven't been experiencing diarrhea or anything like that so I'm not sure if its the lithium or something else.

I'm on Lithium and I've had little pains here and there, but nothing that is that serious or concentrated in the same place. I think I would talk to my doctor about that. I do also have gastritis, and I don't know if the Lithium caused that or not. But I am about to start taking Lithium XR (extended release), which my psychiatrist says should be easier on my tummy. Good luck!

P.S. I'll let you know how things go with the XR tablets. I'm hopeful that it will help my gastritis improve.

I will not say this is a Lithium related pain. But I had a friend who had similar pains. He was not bp and was not medicated. It turned out to be gallstones for him. Either way, you need to check with your doctor.
