Both my pdoc and my therapist are getting insistent that I exercise to reduce stress and anxiety. I am also overweight, but I find what I put in my mouth is MUCH more important than exercise in losing weight.

We belong to a gym free through our insurance. It is actually right next door to where I have a bipolar support group meeting. I could simply go to the gym at 2 and go over to the meeting at 3. And there would be one exercise.

I also found a yoga class for those with medical problems. I certainly qualify. I went and the ladies were all nice and the class was fine. So there could be 2 exercise activities.

I also can walk around the neighborhood with my husband. It gets really hot here, but thought if we got up at 6 one morning a week that would make 3 exercises.

Three a week would be pretty good for me.

Yesterday would have been the Tuesday gym session. I skipped it because I was too tired and just went to my support group.
Today was yoga. I am skipping it because I have a mild headache, would have to drive alone, and just don't want to go. I always have a million excuses.

I know I need to exercise. How can I get off my *** and do it?

My nutritionist says that weight is 90% diet, 10% exercise, so yes, you're right that food intake is much more important than exercise.

Personally, I'm motivated to go to the gym when I know other people who go. We kind of feed off each other's motivation.

Could you get one of your friends to go? Maybe someone from your support group? If you need exercise to reduce stress, then they probably do too.

I am in the same boat. I plan to join a 24 hour gym and go late in the evening/super early morning to avoid people. I think the key is finding something you somewhat enjoy and creating a routine. Having someone to go with is imperative for me. Would that possibly help you as well? For me, weight is much more about what I eat. Exercise builds endurance but in the beginning, don't overdo it. Build slowly. Exercising in water is great if you have physical health issues and pain. I wish they had SUPER heated pools close to me. Our local gyms keep the pools too cold. Some cities have warm water aquatics. Best of luck.

I lift weights every week, it does help with evening out mood and dealing with stress. I'd listen to the doc and give it a shot.

Find something that you genuinely enjoy and do that.

I found CrossFit and I did that about 4 times a week for awhile (until money ran dry because it's so flippin' expensive!)...but I also enjoy running, so I try to do that a few times a week. I'm recovering from an ankle sprain though, so I won't be running anytime soon, and I miss weights, so I'm planning on joining Planet Fitness and trying to go workout either before or after work since it's at the mall and I work at the mall 3-4x a week.

Exercise is real, legit medicine. Little to no side effects and risks. A wonder drug.
Thanks for this!

I hear ya. I too have places I can go, one is a walking machine right here in my apartment building....they have several machine actually. My excuse is is that there's probably someone there, I don't have the right clothes....and my favorite, I have to take another shower!!!

I get my "exercise" through house chores, mainly. I wear a Fitbit that tracks my steps and I have a daily steps goal.

I have a friend that swears by Fitness Blender. You can select the type of workout you want, the intensity level, the length of time, and whether you have equipment or not. You can totally customize it, and do it at home or anywhere you have an internet connection. It can be completely mellow or very rigorous. Maybe try that or something similar a few times a week so you can do it from home and can ease into what you're comfortable with?

Otherwise, I do DietBet to motivate me to both eat correctly and get my workouts in, outside of my regular 2-3 times/week I do martial arts. Those are a set schedule of classes where we all know each other and work together. My family goes, too, so the social bit (having someone to go with) is REALLY key to getting me there regularly.
