Hello! I was prescribed two different medications today. Lexapro and fluanxol. Here's a bit of back story...
So I have been having some serious issues with depression lately. This is not very uncommon for me. But this time is especially bad.
I have been on Lamictal 150mg for about 6 months, recently bumped it up to 200mg. But the depression, sheer lack of motivation, social anxiety, sucidial thoughts, hallucinations, insomnia, all of that fun stuff, has not subsided and recently was exasperated. So I went to my psychiatrist and she prescribed me Escitalopram (lexapro) 20mg daily and Flupentixol (Fluanxol) .5mg when needed.
I am not familiar with these two medications, and the Internet seems to not have anything about combining the two medications. Much less taking Lamictal on top of it.
I was wondering if anyone could share their insight on the two medications, and if anyone has ever taken them together. I really am not familiar with taking a pharma based treatments for Bipolar 1. So anything you guys can share is super helpful.
Thanks in advanced!

First of all, I'm surprised your pdoc didn't increase your Lamictal dosage. Therapeutic dosage for Lamictal ranges from 200mg to 400mg, and it depends on the person. Either way, 150mg is not therapeutic, and your pdoc should have tried increasing your Lamictal dosage first. Obviously 200mg is not therapeutic for you.

Second of all, why would your pdoc prescribe you Lexapro daily and Fluanxol PRN? Lexapro on its own caused an upswing for me, and well... since you're not on a therapeutic dose of Lamictal and you're only taking Fluanxol PRN, you'll probably become hypo/manic. Is your pdoc trying to test if you're bipolar or something?
Thanks for this!

Are you Bipolar 1 or 2? I have taken antidepressants before in combination with mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics (for at least 9 years) and done fine on them for a while until years later I started becoming hypomanic. Sometimes your depression is *that* bad where you need an antidepressant. I wouldn't argue with your doc about that. Just be forewarned that you might get to the point where you start to get hypomanic or manic on the SSRI (Lexapro). I'm not familiar with the Fuanxol, but it sounds like your pdoc is trying to "jolt" you out of your depression with a double whammy of antidepressants. That may be just what you need. Best wishes!! Keep us posted.

I had been taking Lamictal for years on and off from doses anywhere from 50-350mg, but it never seemed to work well for me. It may have prevented manic episodes, but it never seemed to address the severe depression I had felt. She tried adding abilify into the mix, but that left me feeling agitated and anxious. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 5 years ago. Although SSRIs do put me at risk for hypomania (as she explained) I do feel that the current spell of depression is bad enough that it is most likely is warranted.
Have you had a negative experience from antidepressants?

I was diagnosed with bipolar II (typo in the initial post, oops) 5 years ago.
Did the antidepressants you were on help get you out of a particularly bad depression? Were they more of a temporary solution for you?
I believe that this is a temporary strategy, truthfully I would be grateful if it helps just get me through the week at this point.
And Fuanxol is an antipsychotic, I just can't seem to find much on it.
Thank you for your insight, it's very helpful!
