Is it possible to be on Zoloft(sertraline) without any AP meds? I have a bad case of the lows/sideeffs with lithium(at therapeutic lvl) so far and was thinking if I should just depend on that milder anti-depressant(or so I've heard). I'm taking 25mg of it currently. I do fear that it may get me to a bad hypomanic stage I've never been before, but I really, desperately need to get out of this horrible state.

I'm not your pdoc but I would say it's not a good idea. But that's just IMO.

So you're thinking of doing this without talking to your doctor about it? That's not safe - you could end up manic and you don't really want that. At least I wouldn't -- even though hypomania might be welcome for a day or two, sometimes!

You really do need to talk with your pdoc, as using only the Zoloft could cause problems for someone who has bipolar.

I take 50mg Zoloft with 2mg stelazine (an older typical AP) with significant improvement in symptoms. The stelazine dose is very low, not an antipsychotic dose, which would be more along the lines of 10mg which I've heard has horrible side effects. I'm not suggesting you take the same, we're all different but 10mg risperadone is a higher dose, maybe you could ask your pdoc to try the Zoloft with a low dose AP?

Or you might not need an AP but a mood stabilizer might let you take the zoloft (anti-seizure meds like depakote, trileptal, tegretol, etc).

I have Schizoaffective my Bipolar Disorder is manic type. When I started Lithium I sunk into a deep depression and ultimately overdosed on it. All I take for Bipolar is Zyprexa, but it is an antipsychotic because I have Schizophrenia as well.

I've asked a similar question a few days ago on here. I'm on 2 mood stabilizers lithium 400 mg and lamictal 400 mg. I also take 1 AP risperdal 3 mg. My pdoc just gave me a script for Zoloft 25 mg. I've been nervous about filling it. He did warn that it could make me manic. I'll tell you this....right before I was diagnosed correctly (BP1) I was put on celexa (AD). I was not on anything else because I was told I just had depression. I went into really bad mania which did cause me to be correctly diagnosed lol. I'd talk with your pdoc and be "very " careful taking an AD alone. Your pdoc could start you on a different mood stabilizer. I've heard on here many people say they can not take lithium. I'm a lucky one

You should let your pdoc make that decision. As others have said, taking an AD without a mood stabilizer and/or anti-psychotic can be a big problem for someone with bipolar. Please call him/her as soon as possible and see what he/she has to say.
