I have felt depressed today and started drinking a ton of coffee. It seems to perk me up and if I drink it all day, I start feeling less depressed. Is there something in coffee that fights depression or is this just a placebo? Because I swear, the more coffee I drink, the less depressed I feel. Anyone else feel the same way?

Hello earthangel1: Well... the only thing that would be in coffee that would be helpful would be the caffeine, I would presume. Caffeine does tend to perk one up. Unfortunately, it can also keep one awake at night. So it can be a mixed blessing. I'm primarily a black tea drinker. It also has caffeine in it. I have to be careful about how much I drink, because if I drink too much I'll be awake half the night.

It can make you more depressed or more manic, in my experience. It's not like some stimulants that might cause mania when (severely) depressed. But it does increase the production and use of serotonin, (nor)epinephrine (and dopamine) and (brain) metabolism in general, but that doesn't always mean you'll feel better. It's not stronger biochemically than the strength of a psychological reaction to it is, at least, I believe.

Does nothing for me. But I do like it. Especially with cream, cinnamon and maple syrup. If nothing else it gives me a temporary boost of pleasure. But I can drink two cups and go straight to sleep when depressed or 'normal'.

Coffee helps me focus and be productive. It lifts my mood temporarily. However, too much caffeine leads to anxiety and panic attacks.

I can't drink too much coffee. Hurts my stomach.
But I think it helps depression a little.

It depends too on the type of coffee you drink. It sounds like it should be opposite but the lighter/milder the roast the more caffeine you are consuming. The darkest of roasts have considerably less caffeine (incidentally it takes about 3 shots of espresso to equal the caffeine in a standard mug of mild roast coffee).

I drink light roast in the morning. I believe I do wake up quicker and consequently more energetic with that first hit of caffeine. I drink coffee throughout the day switching in the afternoon to a darker roast. I avoid decaf altogether.

FYI, the same is true for the acidity level; the lighter the roast the heavier the acid content. Thus, if you have problems with acid, switch to a much darker roast.

On a related note, my psychiatrist has suggested I added high fat dairy to my coffee. Apparently dair fats are very good for brain health.

I am not sure if it eases depression, but I have been drinking it lately for comfort and for an extra kick in the morning. Plus I have all these cool yummy flavors I bought and I want to try them out.

I take little zips of Cuban coffee while I vape all day long.
It helps depression until I feel jittery. Too much of a good thing.

I don't think it really does anything for depression. I drink a ton and have never noticed a difference.

I believe a little pick me up can lighten anyone's mood from time to time. But if caffeine went so far as to treat BP depression than I'd be the happiest person on earth. I drink mass amounts of caffeine all through the day to deal with the high doses of seroquel I take to sleep.

has no effect on me but to ease the early morning headache , so in a sense I guess it does very short term give me a small window of relief ... another cup and I feel it all day ... jittery .. so I am a one cup senior black coffee every am ... it is my start just as my xanex stops me at night ...
