I've had four different pdoc over the last year alone (state funded place with mostly 6month residents). Every one of them said no to topomax because I'm underweight. I even begged the last pdoc and said I promise to come in with some weight gain If I could just try it. Still a big NO.

So what is it about it that makes you lose weight? Appetite suppressant, I know that. So does it feel like a stimulant then? What's something you'd compare it to??

I didn't lose any weight but I'm on clozapine and stopped gaining weight. Does not feel like a stimulant at all and can make you feel a bit dopey/dull which is why I'm tapering off.

Hmmm I already take a high dose of seroquel at night so I definitely do not need another med that will make me tired.

I was only on Topomax for a week and I forgot most of my passwords, couldn't spell basic words, became very clumsy and unable to write long sentences. No weight gain, in fact I lost my appetite. It didn't even helpmeet with my symptoms (mania, emotional lability, SI) so I begged to go off it. Why do you want to go on it?

Just an idea for a mood stabilizer as my last pdoc told me my seroquel WAS a stabilizer and to "work it out in therapy" when I came to my last visit complaining of my intense irritability and anxiety. I've been on seroquel for 12 years for insomnia, not a stabilizer. And I notice that some agree it's a stabilizer while others do not. Hmm. Well I found out that she's leaving so I'm getting a new pdoc my next visit. But after research I think I may just stay on my lithium orotate supplements and see how that goes. I just got those in the mail on Sunday so not really long enough to tell. Regular RX lithium stabilized me well but I couldn't deal with needing a restroom wherever I went and I ended up with toxicity and thyroid damage anyway. I've tried many others in the past as well with either short term success or none at all.

i was on topamax for a while. it doesnt have a stimulant effect. it mainly just suppresses your appetite. i did lose weight on it and was taken off. it also did have the weird brain side effects, like not knowing what words to use when speaking, and my face and hands would have an intense tingling feeling. topamax is a strange drug that affects the frontal lobe... it is originally an anti-epileptic drug...they do not know why it works on mood stabilization, like most all other psych meds...they arent sure exactly why they work the way they do!

Keep us updated on how the orate goes. I use Lithium Carbonate and it is a godsend but has messed with my thyroid a bit so I have to take thyroid meds on top. No other issues with it though. Would love to move to orate if possible and give my thyroid a break. Have been told it is very weak compared to carbonate so wouldn't have the stabilisation effect I need.

I researched a ton on orotate before taking it and I couldn't find anything on BP dose other than you have to take around double the dose than a mentally healthy person would. So I'm winging it here but so far it seems like my severe agitation has gotten better. I take it twice a day, four tabs total. I figure it's the next best thing if I can't take the RX.

Hope it works for you. That's great that the agitation is improving.
