I asked my pdoc if I would be good for disability and he said yes. He told me options of what to do, but said that getting an attorney for my case would probably be best.

I've never done this before and neither has my mom. We have no idea how to start, what to do, what goes on, how long it takes, etc.

Anyyyy information would be very useful!

Usually a disability attorney will look at your case and if they think you have a good chance, they will take on your case for a percentage of the back pay you receive. You typically receive pay from time you file your case. Some cases take longer than others I had to file in September myself... although I am doing the work myself. You can file yourself on ssa.gov. It's whatever your most comfortable with. Hope this helps.

It took me a year from start to finish. I got a disability lawyer. She helped me through all the steps. I went to court about 3 months before I got my first check.

My husband started mine online. He doesn't remember much and neither do I. A lawyer is probably a good idea. My husband had advise from a lawyer and friend. I know I couldn't have handled it on my own and if I recall your situation correctly I think you will benefit from help also. (((Hugs and luck to you)))

You can have someone fill out your application, if you go to your local SSI office. That's what I did, and everything worked out for me.

Also, you don't get back pay if you're approved in five months or less. At least I didn't.

Good luck!

Second time around is usually more successful than the first. Just a thing about lawyers. Ours lost and did badly enough that SSI (SSDI?) overrode the negative decision (which they never do). Lawyers also took a big chunk of the back pay (anyway). If you have the time and patience you might give it a try yourself first. There are lots of places (including their own site) that can get you through the process.

I used a lawyer and got approved 6 months after I applied. I didn't get any back pay and had to pay the lawyer around $900.

I used a lawyer and got SSDI on the first try. It took six months from start to finish and I got back pay, out of which the attorney got 25%. It was well worth it not to have to deal with gathering all the paperwork and likely being turned down the first time. I never had to go to court.

I signed some papers and my doctors did the rest, it was a dark time and I don't recall much. No idea how much time it took the back pay was huge though.

I got a lawyer after the first denial. I also had a copy of my medical records sent in that showed that I had been suffering from depression for years. I got it the second time. Took about six months.

I used a lawyer from the start I wound up having to go to trial ( 3 years after initial application) back when I filed my fibromyalgia wasn't considered a legit disability, my Bipolar was) my Pdoc and T were furious that I was denied twice , they filled out every form and I had loads of IP stays and OD attempts.

At the hearing the judge apologized and said this waiting should have never happened.

I say get a lawyer asap , they will look at your situation and see if you have a good case.

Good luck

There is a 6 (I'm pretty sure, it's in the 4-6 range) month wait period from your date of disability until you get back pay. So if you get approved really quickly and apply immediately after the day you can't work you won't get backpay.

I know. I got 2 months back pay but was expecting more like 6. I owed it all to my mom for saving my butt when short-term disability ran out and long-term denied me. I really wanted to pay her more than I could and to have some left for me. But better to be approved sooner.

If you are in CA, I can recommend a really good attorney.

Have you applied yet?

I was very lucky with my case. I have heard it usually takes much longer and usually people are denied even with far more serious circumstances. I only have bipolar I, was hearing voices and not working. So I applied back in October of last year and received my first check three days before New Year's Eve. We even consulted a lawyer who told me the rates and whatnot.

Just try to be as detailed as possible in your application. And just in case, look up the rates for lawyers in your area.

Thanks everyone. I'll have my mom or step dad look into it for me since I'm no good with stuff like this. And Sad Mermaid I'm in Missouri, but thank you.

I used a lawyer, but they didn't have to do anything. I was approved in three months and also was approved for private disability through my job. If you are working, ask HR about private disability. Someone just happened to mention it to us or we wouldn't have known.
I had a thirty year history with one doc and tons of records. I had about 5 IP stays over the years. I was hearing and seeing things when I was approved. I have heard people with the most success have a long paper trail of CONSISTENT visits to mental health professionals.
