I have bee on Seroquel for about a month. First at 200mg then 400mg, first instant release and in the last few days XR. I have been putting on weight so want off this med. As I am voluntary I can refuse to take meds so I was considering refusing it from tonight.

Has anyone else stopped Seroquel suddenly and what were the consequences. I am guessing I will have a few sleep issues but little else. It has only been a month so my body should be fine without it. What do you think? Oh, my pdoc is away so I can't run it past him. I am guessing i will just tell him after the fact when I see him on Friday.

Don't stop it suddenly cold turkey style! I had to do that because it caused a blood clot in my leg and I felt horrific for a week or two coming off it. I can understand why you want to stop, but I'd do it by reducing the dosage slowly before coming off completely.
There's some good information in this article, including the side effects of coming off Seroquel. Gotta love meds, side effects when you're on them, side effects when you come off them!

Um, I just stopped Seroquel xr cold turkey from a high dose (4x what it was previously).

(1) severe nausea
(2) almost vomited
(3) cold sweats
(4) dizzy
(5) lack of coordination
(6) panic attack
(7) insomnia

I had to go back on it

Edit: all of these symptoms started on the 3rd day of me being off it

I was weird in that it never caused me physical symptoms when I went off it but it would cause a mood episode and I never knew which one it would be.

But I have only been on it a month so thought it shouldn't be a problem. How long had you guys been on it? I don't have a taper option unless I wait to see a pdoc Friday. I either refuse it or take the full dose. Maybe I will give one night a go and see what happens.

I stopped it cold turkey after 6 weeks. I can't recall having any problems doing so. Not sure of what dosage I had been taking.
Thanks for this!

A month is long enough to become dependent on the Seroquel, and your dose is not low.

I stopped Seroquel suddenly and had miserable withdrawal symptoms. Went back on it and am now going off it slowly.
Thanks for this!

Sigh, I may have to wait to see my pdoc or perhaps the registrar who comes back in tomorrow. I have put on so much weight. I hate the med. Maybe one night(tonight) as a test will be ok.

I totally get where you're coming from, but I think your priority should be getting well, not weight gain. Once you're stable you can come off Seroquel safely. I would wait at least until your pdoc can weigh in (perhaps he can prescribe something else?).

I had been on it just over 4 weeks, which like Laurie says is long enough for your body to become dependent on it. Instead of stopping completely as a test, maybe reduce the dosage a little. Definitely worth speaking to pdoc about it first though.
I didn't find it too bad, apart from it trying to kill me with the blood clots. But I can't reiterate how grim I felt coming off it cold turkey; it was like a really bad hangover after drinking Absinthe.
Hope you get a good resolution to it

Just an update. The registrar who is looking after me while my pdoc is away reduced my Seroquel to 200mg (instead of 400mg) with the view of tapering off. I see my pdoc on Friday so hopefully can reduce it some more then, or stop it entirely. My fluoxetine has also been doubled to 20mg a day. Hopefully this will ease the depressive spells I get in between being stable. The hypomania seems to have gone. I slept 9 hours last night and feel good today but stable. Still tired but going to do some exercise today to help lose weight and boost mood.

Thanks. I will be. As I am IP I can be monitored closely. I am actually hoping for some hypomania...know I shouldn't but it feels so good. Last time i was on Prozac I got hypo then calmed down, then got depressed and it stopped working. Kind of out of non-AD options for dealing with depression so I need to give this a go.

It takes months for the weight to come off, just warning you. It is a horrible drug for me. I am now finally back at a more normal weight but took 8 months to lose it.

I'm not recommending it or anything but I stopped suddenly two different times after months on it with absolutely no problems. The first time to switch to Abilify and the second time to switch to Latuda (which I've been on for more than 3 years).
Thanks for this!
