I was told I had manic-depression. Sadly, the whole time I believed that it was just another word for depression and my new psychologist informed me that no, it wasn't. The problem is, yes, I have depression that lasts days and then I feel back to normal, but I never get that manic high? I've read with bipolar have impulsive behavior and I feel like that isn't me. This is all new and confusing.
Like yes, I get moods where I feel very happy and a little hyper? Mostly I just feel normal. Though I feel like some days, in just one day, I'll be feeling sad/irritated and then happy or vice versa, like mood swings. I can't seem to find out if those day mood swings happen with bipolar disorder. I'm sorry that I am ignorant with this order and I don't mean to say my doctor is wrong, I'm just confused.

Hi Siri. Welcome to Psych Central. I am sorry you are unsure about your diagnosis. Bipolar is not one diagnosis because there are different flavors and variations.

Here are some articles that might be of interest

Bipolar is a wild animal I've lived with it for almost 20 years and I still don't know all I probably could or should about it.

Some forms on the bipolar spectrum possess some traditional symptoms, others do not.

Bipolar II experiences more depressions and hypomanias where they fell good! GREAT! but not TOOO GREAT... and even angry!

There is a lot of anger in bipolar.

Bipolar I has the same depression (just not as much as BPII throughout their lives), as well as hypomania. Big difference is that in BPI we do go too far up which can lead to joyous life mistakes, unending rage or even full-on psychosis.

Another, often not talked about form on the bipolar spectrum, is cyclothymia; where the individual tends to remain within the proximity of the baseline - never moving too far up or down. These people experience dysthymic and dysphoric depressions which are not full-blown depressive episodes; similarly, their ups are nowhere close (in intensity) to BPI or BPII. That said, their mood swings tend to last a hell of a lot longer and thus bring continued suffering to the cyclothymic person.

Welcome to PC!
I hope you'll find some of the info. and support you may appreciate.
please jump in on any thread, making yourself at home!

I knew my diagnosis was BP II before my pdoc had confirmed this.
As CANDC has shared in her post above, there are variations of BPI and BPII.

cmorales gave a great explanation between BPI, BP2 and cyclothymia.

If you feel your diagnosis is in error, or have questions as to how you fulfill the criteria, please do ask your pdoc. Your pdoc should be able to be very specific in answering you. (I'd asked my pdoc this because I'd wanted to know how he was seeing things.)

Again, welcome!
I hope to see you around the forum.

Denial is one possibility, but BP is very confusing. I'm still confused about my diagnosis almost 2 years in. Hang in there with your psychiatrist and make sure you have a therapist to help you work through it all. Welcome to Psych Central!

I don't know if you were told you are living with BPI or BPII.

From what you've written, I'd guess BPII. I could be wrong.
If BPII, there's a lot of info at PsychEducation | Treating the Mood Spectrum

Bipolar is a spectrum disorder and everyone experiences a bit different. You could be closer to the depression side than the manic side and experience what they call hypomanic rather than full blown mania.

I wasnt diagnosed until age 43 .... When I was told " Bipolar" I sit there and thought about my life in a about 1-2 mins and I was like ... Oh well that explains all kinds of things

If the word Bipolar is bothering you just work on treating the symptoms that you are struggling with.
