I guess this all goes to show that Your Mileage Will Vary.

I'm rapid-cycle BP2. I take 450mg bupropion XL but was already at 300mg lamotrigine when I started taking it. Helps me tons. Made me a little hypo at first, but it settled down.

From what everyone else is saying, perhaps I should have been more cautious when starting it, perhaps I just got lucky, perhaps I have the right genetics, or perhaps it's mostly those of us who've had ****** experiences who feel disproportionately motivated to write in with warnings. Idk.

All in all it sounds like the smartest thing is to closely monitor oneself given the possibility that it can cause mania, but by no means to reject it since it can also bring significant relief.
Thanks for this!

I can attest to this; I have never been able to manage hangovers. Even when I was in college (when one is supposed to be “hangover-resistant”), they would always lay me out for at least a day or two. Now, however, it’s more like 3 or 4 days.

Intellectually, I know that alcohol is a huge physical and mental debilitating factor in my life but can’t resist its allure. Especially because it turns the introverted, awkward Clark Kent in me to morph into the social, animated Superman. I try to draw images of how I’ll feel the next morning, but it never works.

I've been on 450mg for quite a while, and it is working quite well for me.

When I was still drinking, I could put away any amount on 450mg XL with no hangovers, never a problem, well into middle age. I attribute this solely to being a raging alcoholic with a leather liver.

Then again, drinking on bupropion lowers your seizure threshold. I know one guy who had a seizure from doing it.

You pays your money and you takes your chances... Wellbutrin for Bipolar?

I tried it twice before I was diagnosed bipolar. It made me anxious.

I REALLY wanted to make it work because my primary doc said it doesn’t cause weight gain.

I’ve tried to get various psychiatrists to let me try it again with a mood stabilizer. It’s always no, end of discussion. Since I’ve had phen fen and propanolol set off mania, there is no way they will give me an antidepressant.

When I took Wellbutrin it helped with my depression, but increased my anxiety.

——Wellbutrin w a stabilizer is so uplifting for depression, but in me I think it pushes me up into hypomania. Have any of you found a solution to this?
HELP! Docs say cut the dose when that happens but I am mixed and rapid cycling so this is hard and my 150 mg pills are hard to cut. May cause me anger issues also.
Please answer. Hugs.

I've always taken it with a mood stabilizer. It's my antidepressant of choice. Sounds like it needs a try before someone knows if it works for them.

I have been taking Wellbutrin for bipolar II disorder, for over ten years. It has been highly effective, in managing my mania and depression.
