I take 600 mg tegretol and 150 mg Wellbutrin daily.Wellbutrin is great for my depressive side but I think it kicks me up into hypomania. They are saying take 75 mg instead when I am hypo, but even skipping days on it doesn’t seem to do it and besides I am mixed states, so I have to prevent crashing. Boy, I get a lot done in hypomania, but the racing thoughts are uncomfortable. I can’t take Xanax every day except in very stressful situations. I don’t want to take a lot of meds.I hear they sometimes prescribe 2 stabilizers.
What med combinations prevent hypomania for you? |

I can't take any antidepressants or stimulants. They destabilize me. Like you, I take Tegretol XR and like that medication, but I believe it is my Seroquel XR that does the most. My Seroquel XR is a wonderful med for me. It calms/prevents mania, mixed episodes, anxiety, and depression. The best bang for the buck. Luckily it's now available in generic so my copay for it is low. I also take a small dose of Lamictal at 100 mg, which has been helpful for depression (not mania, for me), and a mini dose of Klonopin.
I have bp1. |

BPII here and generally stuck in a severe depression. I don't have to be very concerned about hypomania. If it occurs, it's short-lived.
Bumping your post up from page 2. I think you'll get more responses. Take care! ![]() WC

Maybe taking an atypical antipsychotic will help? I really liked Seroquel and now Zyprexa. They are mostly side effect free for me.

I'm BP2 and get mixed occasionally. I've found uping my mood stabilizer (trileptal) to be helpful in preventing hypomania to begin with. I'm also on Latuda, which helps on both ends.
I've also been on APs short-term like Seroquel and Saphris, and those helped to knock down the manic side of things during those episodes. |

I’m taking Latuda since I was starting to become a little hypomanic on just the Fetzima (a newer SNRI antidepressant) and it’s kept me level.

I am BP2 and after trying a bazillion antidepressants (including wellbutrin), I finally switched over to a mood stabilizer (lamictal). It has made a huge difference. As far as moods go I'm usually 80% depressed 20% hypomanic. I haven't had a hypomanic episode since switching to lamictal (four months ago), don't know if that's just a coincidence or it's because of the lamictal. Taking lamictal has improved my depression significantly. I take 200mg/day

When my previous psychiatrist diagnosed me as bipolar type 2, his plan for me was:
Lamactil (he said this is ideal for BP2) plus quetiapine/Seroquel antipsychotic I selected him because we have a local magazine that publishes best doctors as elected by other doctors. I was on this only briefly—I got the dreaded Lamactil headache. Mostly, I want to jump in here to reinforce the Lamactil and Seroquel that we’re alread mentioned. These are very good drugs to try. My current pdoc has diagnosed me as bp type 1, which is why I’m not bothering to post my current meds. It’s just a difference of opinion, though. |
