I recently saw a nurse practitioner who wanted to add wellbutrin to my meds since my manic episodes are mostly under control while my depression is still persistent. Has anyone else gone on it before? Is it normal for someone with bipolar to go on an SSRI? Any success or failure stories? Thanks.

Currently on,
3mg Risperdal
300mg Lamictal
100mg Seroquel.

I am titrating back up on it now. It has worked for me in the past. Wellbutrin is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI) not an SSRI.

Wellbutrin isn't an SSRI. They don't know how it works. Yes, it's a pretty standard bipolar AD

I'm on 300 and I'm probably a bit higher than I should be right now but I dont have a diagnosis yet and I'm not on any stabilizing meds. Either way I'm a lot less crazy than I was on citalopram(ssri) and mirtazapine(atypical?)

It works for me, too. I'm on 400mg/day. I went through a lot of other meds before finding this to be relatively effective for me.

Wellbutrin worked for me and is less sedating and less weight gain problems. It does NOT play well with alcohol though. Mixing them will give you the mother of all hangovers.

That was one reason I stopped using it a while back and why I can add it back now (a little over two and a half months sober).

I took Wellbutrin for over a year(And only that long because my Dr and I tried to discontinue and it was a disaster-even when attempting to taper off) I couldn't get over the depression at all, even when mixed with different varieties of "cocktail" for my other symptoms and maintenance meds.
I am currently taking as my "cocktail"
Eskalith 900mg
Lamictal 200mg
Seroquel 400mg (prn)
Klonopin .5mg

Over a 3 year period I tried a bunch of other meds, and I found that ssri's do not work for me and actually increased my manic episodes.

Wellbutrin (or as I call it, Hellbutrin) made me manic AF. This was before I was diagnosed with BP and so I wasn't on any mood stabilizers. I was paranoid and wildly delusional, and was I ever ANGRY!! I'll never touch the stuff again.

Wellbutrin provoked extreme and prolonged manic episodes for me. I've always had hypomanic/mixed episodes but this was through the roof. Same with Effexor and Lexapro. Wasn't on any of them long enough (4-6 weeks) to find out if they might be effective for depressed states.

It was my go-to AD. I wasn't one to spend much time on the mania end, so pdoc wasn't too worried about it setting off a manic episode, and it didn't.

Wellbutrin has worked wonders for me in the past but also caused hypomania. Now I'm on an AP so we've added the Wellbutrin to see if it helps without making me go "up, up & away". I've been taking a low dose for a week and haven't noticed any benefits yet. We shall see.

BP II here.
Wellbutrin used to be my "go-to" med. Recently, we'd restarted it and I'd had a dystonic reaction to any dose above 100 mg. SR. I do take the 100 mg in my current cocktail.

I am very sorry my body now responds to this med with dystonia.

I hope it works out for you!

My psych NP gave me the finger wagging about not titrating to hypomania. I don't lie to pdoc or t, so they know I enjoy a little hypo every now and then. She prescribed 1-4 75mg tabs. I am at 225 today and will be for a few days. I used to take 300 and had some hypo but I was not on lamictal at the time. But if 225 lifts me out of my low key sulk, I won't push it. Or at least I will try not to. I may end up on daily 200mg tabs.

I do wonder though, if 300 caused hypo would dropping back to 225 after a day or two bring you back out of it? Asking for a friend...

worked well for me. doesn't seem to do much for ruminations, anxiety, ocd-type stuff (common in general, especially in bipolar I...), but...no weight gain, helped concentration and energy levels, less apathy and emotional numbing than the ssri or ssnri options.

stopping was easy, too. pscyhosocial factors improved a lot in my life, so I just...stopped the wellbutrin. no probs, at all. I was on 400mgs.

As others said, Wellbutrin is not an SSRI and the good news with that is it tends not to exacerbate mania or lead to its onset, while still helping with depression.

Unfortunately, I was still in the category of people, where it didn't work. I went manic. Although maybe I would have gone manic anyway, it definitely exacerbated it, made me very anxious, keyed up, and I felt completely weird on it. So it wasn't for me at all.
I don't want to discourage you, just sharing my experience. It works for many. Best of luck.

Wellbutrin worked well for me. In the past I had been on Prozac at the same time. My pdoc even placed me on a stimulant for a period of time. So between all of this I was able to function.

Before I was diagnosed bipolar I was on it. It made me more anxious. It is a good one to try - it doesn't cause weight gain and may help with weight loss
