I'm finishing my first week of Latuda and I'm suffering the worse depression of my life. I can barely work... barely get through a day. Just wondering/hoping it's an adjustment to the meds. I see my pdoc next week to check in.... so hopefully will get some answers and that something will change.

Looking forward to hearing about other's experiences with adjusting to this med.

If this one doesn't work.. I can't imagine going through another med change. I might just be done with meds.

From what I have heard it takes a couple of weeks for the full effects of a medication to kick in, so maybe give it some more time. My experience with Latuda was that it gave me a happy mood but also terrible vomiting so had to stop.

Latuda takes a few weeks. My pdoc had to keep tweaking my dose. I had the worst depression and suicidal thoughts when i first started on it. But thats all gone away and Ive been on it for 4 weeks now. I feel pretty good now. Only side affect I have is nasty stomach and super tired in the evenings. Both go away after a bit.

hi. i may be in the minority here, but...in my limited experience, if a tranquilizer/antipsychotic is causing depression, dysphoria, etc. early on, it might be good to talk about a different tranquilizer, maybe something outside of the tranquilizer/antipsychotic class of drugs.

although the 'atypicals' are being used for everything, the core uses are still ongoing treatment in Schizophrenia, mania or severe depression, and daily maintenance for a select group of people with Bipolar I. These drugs really should -not- be mega-bestsellers, no matter how 'atypical' they may seem.

and now...end rant, lol. if you need a tranquilizer, maybe abilify or one of the new D2 partial agonists? I think vraylar and rexulti are both approved for mood disorders, and for -some- people, they're easier to tolerate and less toxic than many other options.

sorry you're suffering.

I was on a heavy dose when I was in IP, but now on the lowest dose. I had the opposite effect: I had akathisia pretty bad. Being on this dose is okay. I also have some TD but Artane takes care of that.

With a lower dose I'm also able to take Viibryd for an AD. Mood has been pretty stable so far.

I don't know in what way you think antipsychotics and tranquilizers are interchangeable. Abilify, Vraylar, and Rexulti are all antipsychotics. Tranquilizers are things like benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan...); they're for anxiety not depression or mania.

Anyway I was going to say that usually antipsychotics kick in pretty quickly unlike SSRI's which can take even up to two months. But of course it does what it's going to do. The first two times I tried Wellbutrin it really depressed me, and right away. When I went on to Latuda from Seroquel I didn't notice any change in mood and the only (only!) side effect I had was akathisia. I hope the depression clears up and it ends up working for you.

antipsychotics are major tranquilizers. benzodiazepines are minor tranquilizers. antipsychotics are also sometimes referred to as neuroleptics.

Well, just a short search shows you're right. Sorry. I still think that's an odd way to classify them since FDA approves them usually for schizophrenia (which also translates them to mania) or bipolar depression.

hi. don't worry about it. I just don't like the term "antipsychotic," that's all. I think its misleading. They tranquilize. Not a bad thing per se, just...that's what they do. So...I refer to them as tranquilizers.

now, if only we could come up with a good replacement for the term "antidepressant..."
