I followed my doctor's instructions for tapering off clozapine but I still feel like crap. I slept a whopping one hour last night and four hours the night before that, and I've been very nauseous especially in the mornings. There's some other stuff too but not as severe.
How long will this last? What can help? I see my doctor next week so hopefully he can give me something for sleep, but what to do until then?

Hopefully your psychiatrist can advise you how to lessen the withdrawal symptoms. There could be various ways to do it. I know when I was going off Geodon I had terrible withdrawal symptoms, though not so much related to my sleep. My psychiatrist just had me wean off of it very very slowly. Maybe you're reducing the dose a little too quickly? Or maybe tecomsin has a possible solution mentioning transferring to a sedating med. Or some other method? Your psychiatrist should definitely advise you properly.

I'm not trying to be funny. I had a hard time getting off them and now I'm battling an oxycodone addiction.

People like you should not treat rehab as a celeb venue. They really help.

I developed agranulocytosis last November and had to quit instantly.. 3 days later also had to quit my MAOI and PPI (stomach medicine) because they can also cause agranulocytosis and my levels weren't improving yet.

I was allowed to take nightly lorazepam, and oxazepam during the day, instead of as PRN. It went better than expected in some ways but it was hellish. I didn't take the oxazepam daily for long - less than a week I think - because I felt I could do without (so as a PRN again instead of 3 times a day) and I could. Lorazepam took longer, also had to increase the dose a few times.. it's also back to PRN now but I'm still not sleeping right.

Quitting the clozapine significantly increased my bad dreams - both PTSD memory dreams, and just disturbing dreams - and my daytime trauma thoughts.

I want back on.

Last night I loaded up on my PRNs (Ativan and zyprexa). Got a solid 7 hours of sleep. Also, the nausea isn't too bad today.

hi. not to scare you, but clozapine discontinuation has a -definite- set of problems associated with it. I guess because it was (is?) hailed as such a miracle pill, there's more data on tapering than on the other 'atypicals.' Anyway...

the "Experts" on psych drug tapering say to cut 10% per month, if your goal is to be drug free. I don't know the rules for cross tapers.

My best guess is that sedatives, antihistamines, etc. could help the tapering process. Are you planning to start a different tranquilizer? Some people swear by supplements. When my docotor -finally- reduced my Abilify dosage, I popped the Suntheanine like candy, and that helped with a sudden dosage reduction.

sorry about this. hope things get better for you.

I've already started risperidone to replace it. I guess my doc wanted to taper quickly because the clozapine was messing with my heart.

Your heart? Thats scary. I've been thinking of going back on, since it's the only AP that dose not give me dystonia. Do you know more about your heart condition that you could share?

Clozapine did significantly increase my heartbeat, to about 110 beats a minute in rest.

This is exactly what happened, wicked fast heart rate even when not doing anything. I had an ECG done a while back and it was abnormal (forget what they said) and they took me off amoxapine, but it turns out it was clozapine that was doing that.
