Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I joined for two questions and this is one of them...

Have any of you tried Colostrum? It's supposed to be good for the gut and mood, but it completely threw my mood off in such a bad way and I'm still trying to get my footing again.

Anyone have any experience? I do have gut issues, so I'd like to be able to take it. And i've heard only good things, so this was surprising to me. Definitely afraid to try it again. I felt depressed while on it and then hypomanic after discontinuing it.

Thanks!

Welcome to PC!

I have never heard of taking colostrum supplements. I only ever new it was the first kind of milk produced by a nursing mom full of nutrients and antibodies. Very interesting it’s made as a supplement now. I’ll be curious to read other posts on this topic

Haven't heard of colostrum but have heard of milk probiotic bacteria. They are much cheaper, easy to buy anywhere and I believe more effective compared to supplement pills. Just eat yogurt, kefír, acidophilus milk on a daily basis.
Might have been a coincidence but in the winter I was rather depressed and after eating fermented dairy products every day for about a week my mood improved.
Might have been a random coincidence, surely it's not a proof or evidence, just my anecdote.

I surely have an upset digestion because of eating issues and many antibiotics I had to take in my life. I believe it had an impact on my gut. Also stress kills the good bacteria.

I've never heard of taking colostrum for bipolar. When I was pregnant and making colostrum my last trimester and shortly after my daughter was born (before my milk came in), I never noticed a difference. In fact, my OB had me on Zoloft (he figured it was depression) & occasional Xanax. Don't think colostrum helped my BP at all.

I would imagine making it and consuming it would be very different since by making it, you are not digesting it and it is not in your blood stream. Also, I think the OP is probably taking cow colostrum.

It contains hormones so it would stand to reason that it could effect your mood. This article from UC @ Berkeley is interesting Do Colostrum Claims Hold Up? | Berkeley Wellness

I was an avid breastfeeder with both of my kids. I love cow milk and goat milk. Swallowing colostrum, though...I'm sorry, I would gag. Just the thought. That said, you can do it and I sincerely hope it helps you.

That name. Colostrum?. It sounds like **** to me.
I'll never take anything with a name like that.

Thank you for your post. I went to read about it on Amazon reviews for the capsules and see people mostly posting about autoimmune disease.

I’m going to try it for autoimmune issues— my daughter has a worse problem that I do. I hope it works.

Are you familiar with what colostrum is? It's quite amazing.

The mother's body makes it specifically for just born babies before the milk comes in. I don't think it's made for anything else. And where the hell would they get it from? Would they milk it from brand new mothers who aren't going to breastfeed? The whole thing sounds both crazy and icky to me.

Colostrum contains all sorts of amazing properties...natural antibiotic elements, dense vitamins and minerals, etc.

And I have the same questions you have.

That's exactly what I thought of. That there have to be ethical issues with this. Yes, I know, we kill animals all the time (yes, I eat meat, too) and we use them for leather and fur... However taking newborn baby cows away from their mothers so we can get the colostrum that was intended for the baby.... I don't know... maybe it's because of my own attachment issues and my own childhood trauma... but this seems especially cruel to me.

(Please note I'm not interested in starting a debate about animal cruelty or vegan/meat eater debate. This was just my random thought and I hope it won't escalate into anything serious)
Thanks for this!

I wouldn't think cow colostrum would benefit humans. It's made for baby cattle, not humans, just as human colostrum is made for baby humans. It is what the mother's body makes before her milk comes in after giving birth. For me, my milk didn't come in until 5 days post-baby, and in the meantime, my daughter drank colostrum. It's in liquid form. I would think solidifying it and pasteurizing it would kill off the benefits anyway. Many hormones and antibodies are heat-sensitive.

Did you actually read anything about it? Please provide a reference.

I’m not a vegan, but if you drink milk or eat cheese for pleasure, you’ve got no basis for this post. This is another product in daily industry.

I think this thread is too unfriendly to this brand new member seeking help. If someone even had an answer now, would they respond?
