I happened to be reading about sza and its in mymedical file as one of my "complaints". I think it fits me well but the problem is that pdoc does not. She is adamant that i have bipolar and thats that. But read my blog: its full of hallucinations and delusiins outside a mood episode. And it definitely is sza bipolar type.

I thought you were talking about SZA the singer haha. I've never heard of a sza bipolar type.

Yeah, my therapist thinks schizoaffective for me too, but one of the pdocs I met said that sza is just a diagnostic code they use for themselves. It's an insurance thing from what I can tell, so I try not to worry about it. The more I dwell, the worse off I am. Of course, some people care about the labels, and I guess it's up to you if you want to pursue the correct label.

FWIW, my diagnosis changed from BP to SZA but my treatment plan essentially stayed the same. So it might not matter very much from a treatment standpoint. Even so I understand wanting to have an accurate diagnosis.

Consider, as i did, maybe I'm in a 'mood' more often than I realize (the same may be true for you)... For example, I was having hallucinations and delusions a lot in April for example, but really from February thru late April I was on a 3 month long manic episode (let's call it spring mania).

The whole world seemed magical while i was in that 'other place', now it's far less such.

I've been diagnosed both SZA Bipolar Type and just Bipolar depending on who you ask -- as some have said the treatment is the same but you're more likely to qualify for more disability type benefits with a SZA diagnosis because it is more disabling

What definitions of SZA have you read? I was diagnosed for years as bipolar but now my pdoc thinks it might be SZA because I had psychotic symptoms without pronounced mood symptom but it is hard to tell the difference.

It really doesn't matter. A DSM stickler would diagnose me with SZA, but literally every pdoc I've had doesn't diagnose SZA because it's the same thing as bipolar with psychosis. Yes, I know in sza you have psychosis outside of mood episodes, but either way you're going to want an antipsychotic so. Sza and bipolar with psychosis are closer than bipolar I and bipolar II IMHO. The only difference is the general public doesn't have a clue what schizoaffective is, and if they look it up you have more stigma against you.

I was worried about being misdiagnosed too (pretty sure most of my symptoms are caused by lasting damage from TBI), but everyone here reassured me that it doesn't matter as long as I have an adequate bandaid.

The treatment for Bipolar 1 and SZA are usually the same meds.
Thanks for this!

Was about to start a thread on the same topic! I think my son could be SZA as he is still psychotic nearly three months in (and still in hospital, possibly still commitable) or it could still be part of the mood cycle - mania, depression then probably going back up to mania as they have added wellbutrin. The new fancy hospital hasn't taken any diagnosis off the table yet and are doing a thorough analysis, but I am sure it is bp1 or SZA as his mania was pure text book mania

I don't know what my dx is. I say it's SzA. I have no idea what my Dr think. My therapist thought my parinoia was "just "anxiety.

Consider printing (on paper) pages of your blog and bringing them with you to pdoc (hand it to them, with highlights, if you must).. I've (with therapist anyway) gotten in the habit of taking notes with OneNote and bringing them (on phone or laptop/tablet) to biweekly session
