I've been looking into getting a Weighted Blanket for anxiety but I really don't know how to choose one? I've looked on several websites selling them and it's all so confusing.

What weight would I need? Does it matter if the beads inside are glass or plastic?

What's the Pros and Cons of using one?

I just can’t imagine using one outside of winter.

That’s all I think when weighted blankets comes up

I’m sure others will have first hand experience.

The weight should be about 10% of your weight, up to 20 lbs or so. I think lots of people are happy at less; mine is 22 lbs which is "heavy" for my weight but I tried a lighter one before I got this one and was pretty confident that I really was seeking a lot of pressure. I haven't been disappointed except that making my bed is more work.

Mine (all 3) have plastic beads. I wouldn't want glass beads for fear of damage if somehow (mine is well-made and tearing would be really difficult) there was a tear. It also washes well without the beads getting all hot.

For me it is all pros. I'm an OT, the people who have been using weighted blankets for many years, and I was taught that if you are a sensory seeker and the blanket really helps the heat won't bother you. I do tend to kick it off more in the summer but it still is draped across my hips and lower back.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask more if you have more questions.

Thanks for this. I’m planning on getting my daughter a weighted blanket for Christmas and didn’t know where to start.

I have a Gravity Blanket anD I like it. See here: Gravity Blanket – Gravity Blanket - The Weighted Blanket for Sleep and Stress

I agree that weighted blanket weights should be 10% of your body weight. At Gravity Blankets, the smallest weight they have is 15 lbs. I'm about 100 lbs. I'm still fine with a 15 lb blanket, though.

They now sell a "cooling" blanket so that you don't get too hot. I don't know how well it works or not because I have the original blanket. I actually bought my Gravity Blanket off Kickstarter when the inventors were pitching their idea to the public, so I got a $50 discount.

The Gravity Blanket helps me fall asleep and stay asleep. It's actually a plush blanket, so it's ultra comfortable. I don't get too hot because I keep my air temperature cool. However, if you know you're prone to getting too hot, try their cooling blanket. Again, I don't know how well it works, but I really, really like the original one.

Yes, you were very helpful, and thank you for responding. I do have a lot more questions about it if you don't mind answering. I feel I would benefit from it too and I want to get one soon as possible, as my sleep has been nearly non existent for a very long time.

My body weight is around 250 pounds so that means I would probably need one about 25 pounds? I'm worried that might be too heavy? The problem is ordering them from online you don't know how the weight is going to be and then I would have to send it back to try another blanket weight.

I also don't understand the sizes because they don't go by bed size Twin , Full, Queen, King.

Fabric: I usually like soft fuzzy blankets but I was told by customer service of one company that because it's weighted that the Minky fabric can be too warm for some people.

I also found out my health insurance does cover them if my doctor writes a script but I can't seem to find a Medical Supplier that takes any insurance or even deals with them at all.

All of this just has my head spinning ! !

What company did you get yours from if you don't mind me asking?

I've never seen them go up to 25 lbs. My 22 lbs is about as high as I've seen. The place I bought mine has gone out of business. I can't imagine any heavier than mine to deal with making the bed etc. I'd say 20 lbs or so is probably good.

Mine is Minkee dots. It is pretty warm but I'm the kind of person who sleeps under 3 comforters and 2 quilts and maybe a blanket or two in the winter and a blanket and comforter in the summer (plus weighted blanket for both). I found the soft fabric was calming and I rubbed the dots between my fingers until they worn down to flat.

Mine came sized like bedding sizes.

I have no idea where to get one that is covered by insurance. I wish I did.

Hope this helps

Got one. Waiting for winter. Sweat like a pig. BTW, pigs don't sweat.
Nothing like sleeping naked to show yourself how confident you are.
