I had a rough day Friday at work and I haven’t been back since. While off, I came to the conclusion I need to find a career that works around some of my issues. It has become apparent my anger/rage episodes are worsening as I get older wheras I thought they would get better! I started briefly looking into bipolar coaches but I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with meeting a career advisor whom specializes in bipolar?

Do such "specialists" by chance have no medical credentials?

I’ve heard of such type people/ professionals .

But I haven’t heard of anyone really benefitting from one, did you check under the “ work forum” I dunno maybe there is info there that might help you ?

Please let us know what you find out if anything , might benefit others.

I have never experienced this, Bipolarchic14, so unfortunately I don't have a lot of advice to give to you. Just wanted to let you know that I've read your post and that I care about you. I hope you'll be able to find what you're looking for. It seems like he/she may be really helpful to you. It's good that you're trying to find a career for yourself! Be proud of yourself for that. Just try to find something that you like doing and that you're good at. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. Sending many hugs to you
Thanks for this!

I had never heard of this so I googled for my town. One (online) works with a licensed therapist, eg it sounds like they consult but anyone could claim this. Some of them are certified life coaches. I would be very careful with this whole concept, especiallly verifying their knowledge of bipolar. I went to a life/job coach and was not impressed.
I would worry that someone without the training therapists are required to have would not recognize various issues that they are trained for. Sorry Doc John, I have felt that many of my therapists have been inadequate since they tend to just sit there, not set goals. However, most of them know to avoid transference (not all of them obviously from the stories on our forums) and how to handle other tricky issues that I am very skeptical about these people knowing how to handle. I’m not saying they would all be bad, but avoiding a professional therapist for a bipolar life coach would be unwise in my o pinion. Anyone can say they are one of these and that is the biggest danger. Bipolar is one of the most complicated disorders. Lots of red flags here, so be careful. I would love to find a therapist who really specialized in bipolar instead.

Before I got bipolar I worked with an executive (career) coach. I found it very useful. In my case I was able to leave a toxic environment without imploding, ask confidently for significantly more money in the next job etc.
If I was ever able to join the workforce I’d have no hesitation using one again to reinvent myself.

Thank you! I may honestly just go to a regular coach and explain my needs to them. They very well may be able to help me anyway without lying to somebody that specializes in helping people with bipolar disorder.

I don't know what your financial situation is, but when I was going to one of the centers that was in connection to the county mental health, they had a job coach (there's another name too that's escaping me atm). They would help with your resume and job search, and of course, being where they were working, your limitations were taken into consideration.

He found me my previous job (I just switched jobs --on my own-- and think I made a huge mistake). The job had a number of things going for it -- it didn't involve working with the public, I didn't have to answer phones, the work was repetitive, and very straightforward. I didn't need to memorize much at all and at the end of the day, I didn't "bring the job home with me". It worked around my particular issues (for the most part. Turned out it was quite triggering for my BDD, but given that I am triggered pretty much 24/7 about it, it's not escapable anyway. Besides, I never talked about the BDD, so they didn't even know about it.) He found the job, and I never would have found it. I didn't even know the place existed and they didn't advertise.

I will say that it took awhile to get in with them, as it was a popular service and only one person doing it, but it might be something worth investigating around you (if you are on medicaid anyway).

—however now u recognize that U have bipolar. I’m just throwing this out there but was it the stress of that higher paid job or other life stressors that made u crack and realize u are bipolar? Always the devils advocate, me. Hugs!

No nothing to do with stress. I had a cancer scare and had to have my ovaries out. Low estrogen/surgical menopause triggered bipolar. If I still had my ovaries I’d be bipolar free.
