It’s an earth, a deep blue oceans, with the continents in various greens and browns and a translucent white cloud cover swirled over it. I found it at a Goodwill for $1. It’s an expensive ornament and beautiful. My other favorite is cardboard cutouts that my granddaughter painted when she was three.

Are you looking forward to 2022

Not really - I've got a lot of stressors and life is moving by slowly.

Favorite Christmas appetizer (I've been told to bring appetizers to Christmas gathering and have no idea what people like)

My absolute favorite was salmon mixed with cream cheese and put into a phyllo shell, I then put dill weed on half and cayenne pepper on half. It’s so easy even I can do it. You can use tuna too.

Let’s give her more ideas! Same question?

Czechs have many! And Christmas Eve is sort of more significant than Christmas Day. As for food, carp and carp soup with potato salad. A carp scale is often kept in wallets for a year for good luck. There is a tradition where each family member lights a candle on a floating walnut shell. The shells that float away indicate travel or possibly marriage. Those who stick to the bowl side stay home. Also, burning of frankincense for spiritual purity. Burning of one candle per week as an advent leading to Christmas. Eating a special sweet Christmas bread called vanočka or another called Bishop's Bread, that has special religious meaning. Of course many Christmas cookies of various varieties. Melting then cooling of lead, with the shape of the cooled led predicting the future.

In Czech Republic, Saint Nicholas doesn't bring kids presents on Christmas. He brings only small ones on the Feast of Saint Nicholas, earlier in December (around Dec 6) when accompanied by the devil and an angel (three adults dress up as these and have special roles). On Christmas Eve evening, before the dinner, Little Baby Jesus comes and brings presents and the decorated Christmas tree. Then all open presents after Christmas Eve dinner. Christmas Day also includes a dinner, but a more laid back one. The day after on December 26 (Saint Stephen's Day) is also a family visitation Day.

What might/did you get for yourself for Christmas?

I'm generally a kid in a sweetie shop at Christmas time. But this year I'm miserable. I'm sitting with my Christmas jumper on not feeling very festive. I think it's different if you have kids as your excited for them.

Question: Any Christmas Day traditions?

Hi @raging vortex. My husband is Czech and we now live in Czech Republic. I am American and grew up with typical Anglo American Christmas traditions. Santa Claus, Christmas Day family celebration (turkey or ham dinner), stockings with stocking stuffers, gifts under the tree...but a lot of that ended in my family after my mom died, so I've mostly adopted my husband's traditions, which are a bit richer. Frankly, my family situation on my side is a bit sad and depressing. Long story.

Miss Laura's question above for next responder.

No, not any more. It’s just mum and I. We were invited out for ham dinner but we’re not going. I picked up brunch for 2. We’ll eat on that for the next couple of days. It’s a lot of food.

Any movies you like to watch Christmas Day?

Any New Year's Eve traditions or anything you are looking forward to in 2022?

We watch the fireworks on TV from around the world. I usually have a drink of some kind, this year it will be Bailey’s or amaretto sour. Just the one then at midnight we go to bed. Hopefully 2022 is a better year.

Oh, the question!

What traditional things do you do on New Year’s Eve?

On New Year's Eve (Hogmanay in Scotland) I get the house tidy for the new year, this is a major clean that we all do means you Sweep out the old top bring in the new.

I usually also either go to the local pub for 9pm then ringing in the bells (see in midnight) at the pub. Or I stay at the pub until 11:30pm then head to my parents house where we have a party

Then when midnight strikes my Dad will go outside just as midnight comes and on the strike of 12am he knocks on the door bringing a lump of coal into the house a Scottish tradition. He also brings alcohol, biscuits and a calendar.

After this... I will visit family and friends bring food, drink and calanders to them. This will go on through-out January.

I use to do a thing called The New Year Dook (swimming in the local river at -5 degrees or less depending on the temperature on Jan 1st morning or afternoon) but it's been off for a few years due to covid. I use to do it in aid of charity raised thousands of pounds. Some people do it in fancy dress costumes too.

Question: Any New Year's Resolutions?

For something different to happen in 2022. I'm hoping my husband and I will be closer to figuring out where we'll live long-term. In doing so, I will need to finally start rapidly improving language skills, accordingly.

What is something good that happened to you in 2021?

I chose to be clean from drugs and alcohol.

If you could talk to anybody (dead or alive or future) on a bench for an hour, who would you choose?

No, and they likely won't until a little after New Years. Unlike in some families, my husband's Czech family and my American family never decorated until just before Christmas (not in October or November like some) and then always left them up until after New Years. I generally have ZERO Christmas spirit until about a week or so before the actual holidays. I often wonder if ultra early decorating was actually some real custom somewhere, or more a result of pressure from marketing efforts in stores and on television.

What event(s) are you looking forward to either in the near future or in 2022?

Going to a few gigs albeit if covid behaves. Going on holiday again if covid behaves.

Question: Any plans on New Year's Eve? If not what would you normally do if covid wasn't around?

Covid doesn’t affect my New Years plans. But I’m old. When I was young I often went out on New Year’s Eve. Now though I just stay home and watch the fireworks on TV, though I do stay up till midnight to greet the new year. I’m really hoping that 2022 is a much better year for the world.

I’m watching paddington bear, it’s pretty cute. Any fantasy movies that you like?

I am a die hard Xanadu fan circa 1980 with Olivia Newton John. It was also Gene Kelly's last movie- god he is a great dancer. I have been told it has a cult following.
Do you think going out with a date on New Years eve is overated or super fun?

I would think having a date on New Years Eve should be super fun, but "should" is certainly an ideal, in some cases. It depends on who and where, for sure. The loveliest New Years Eve I spent was with my husband (then fiance) one year in Czech Republic during a visit to see his family and friends. Nowadays I usually prefer to spend that night at home. Unlike in the past, I get sleepy that late at night, unless I hold off on my evening medications. If I do the latter, I can't fall asleep until like 3 or 4 am, and usually my mood state suffers a bit. I can't drink heavily anymore, either.

What do you plan to do on New Years Eve?

The art studio just put there new classes on line. They have a couple on classes I’d really like to take. Including a glass mosaic one. It’s not until March though. But I’ll look forward to that. And I’m looking forward to my area getting safer covid wise, then I can go back to the Y, and my aqua classes.

The sun is brightly shining here. Does bright sunshine ☀️ cheer you up or lift your mood?

the oppositte

I don't like the sun because it reminds me of everything I am missing being agoraphobic- and I get caught in this thought process.. everyone is out doing stuff, but me!. it sucks!

plus: I really hate being hot. I have 2 fans but I still get very hot sometimes

do you use a fan?, or do you prefer to open the windows or use AC
