Have you ever felt like you were dismissed by a physician based on your psychiatric history?
My NP dismissed me a lot and perhaps I am mistaken but it’s like she always wants to blame it on mental health/psych meds. Like yes I know risperdal can make you sleepy a lot but it also causes diabetes which can make you tired! She’s forever making me feel stupid __________________ Bipolar 1 w/psychotic features or schizoaffective bipolar type PTSD generalized anxiety OCD celexa, prazosin, Lybalvi and prn zyprexa and klonopin |

OMG, YES! My GP, every time I see her about anything, rags on me about needing to lose weight. I have explained to her many times that I gained weight while on Seroquel. Prior to Seroquel, I have told her, I weighed 110lbs. (I'm 5'6".) She always looks either doubtful or confused. It is frustrating and demeaning. Very much so. Also, I feel like she's obviously not well-educated about psych meds, and doesn't care to be. I'm really glad because it seems like she's not at the clinic much anymore, so I've been seeing a different provider.

I have had a few GPS be dismissive but most were good about it, I had more problems with pdoc s being dismissive of medical issues. I have been on psych wards a few times when I developed serious medical issues and was dismissed as nothing. I checked myself out of the psych ward once and went straight to the ER where they did a ultra sound and found out I had an obstruction of the bowels. I was scheduled for emergency surgery.. under the same pdoc another time I had shingles and couldn’t get anyone to look at the rash until I pulled up my shirt in front of them. Talk about painful! On the other had I had gallstones for over a year and couldn’t get my doctor or ER to take me seriously, they kept saying I was having trauma memories. Finally one night in ER I was telling another de missive doctor my symptoms and he offered me pain pills I was so frustrated I said if you don’t look for the cause of the pain I’m going to take the whole bottle of pills to get it over with,….of course he sectioned me. But a intake nurse listened to me and called a doctor who ordered an ultrasound and I had gallstones so badly they scheduled me for three procedures. One though my mouth, another was a small operation and a major operation. For the next day.
I blame the medications for everything except the shingles. Doctors have got to get it together and realize that the whole body/ mind is one component __________________ Nammu …Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. I haven't really had any significant physical (non mental) illnesses in my life, so that part was never an issue for me. Knock on wood. What I did encounter is doctors (not pdocs) judging how many psych meds I was prescribed and/or why I was still sick on all of them. Truth is, sometimes the numbers were staggeringly high, and on a few occasions I was on one or two that did little more than cause side effects, however other times I needed them all. Also, it's really not another doctor's place to judge psych med prescribing, if they aren't a psychiatrist. I think doctors often judge other doctors.
At least with diabetes you can have a test that says either way, but that's terrible if other physical stuff is discounted as being "in one's head". Nammu was right to strongly advocate for herself and push further investigation. We have to be tough at doing that. Unfortunately, I think many people, including some pdocs/tdocs, look at mentally ill as weak, sometimes unintelligent, (dang, I can't think of the right word) and/or sometimes even childish. Some mentally ill people reinforce such notions. It hurts us all. I had to prove myself right on a few things to my old psychiatrist. Even to my husband. Yet, sometimes I've also been wrong. __________________ Dx: Bipolar type 1 Psych Medications: * Tegretol XR (carbamazepine ER) 800 mg * Lamictal (lamotrigine) 150 mg * Seroquel XR (quetiapine ER) 600 mg I also take meds for blood pressure, cholesterol, and tachycardia. As a teenager yeah, but not recently, like in the past 4 years. But someone who doesnt have a weight problem and also has legit medical issues that show up on blood tests are more likely to be taken seriously by doctors then someone who is overweight and who just goes into the doctors with some vauge symptoms.
And I'm talking about my own personal situations and expirences. __________________ Ridin' with Biden Last edited by Mountaindewed; Mar 26, 2022 at 09:25 AM.. |

I'm also prediabetic. Meds may have played a part, but also I have used food as a coping mechanism for loneliness and boredom (especially during the pandemic).

My PCP has never dismissed any concern I have, but he does act off around me since I've been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder. Like he walks on eggshells for no reason. Like, bruh, if I'm seeing YOU and not some psych doc at the state hospital we're doing good. I haven't had any vague symptoms to bring up to anyone though. Only things I've needed help for in a few years are a broken hip, foot drop, and poison ivy on 1/3 of my body knock on wood.

Why not switch pdocs or at least tell her how you feel. I am sorry she makes you feel stupid. You deserve to be heard and not automatically discounted. It makes sense that you would be very worried about getting diabetes. I'm a bit worried for myself, as well. I need this to motive me more to fight it off. It's hard. __________________ Dx: Bipolar type 1 Psych Medications: * Tegretol XR (carbamazepine ER) 800 mg * Lamictal (lamotrigine) 150 mg * Seroquel XR (quetiapine ER) 600 mg I also take meds for blood pressure, cholesterol, and tachycardia. I've definitely been dismissed by more than one physician re a real physical issue based on my psych history. It's a very real and wrong phenomenon, and scarily ''common'' ...

Sometimes when someone is afraid of having something wrong with them they post about it a lot.

Unfortunately “mental illness and treatments “ are a dumping ground when some providers don’t stop and think for a nano second. It’s terrible!
I hate that you have to deal with nonsense from Medical providers and others. Hang in there Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk __________________ Helping others gets me out of my own head ~ |
