I have akathisia.
No one will give me relief.
My Pdoc only wants to lower and take away my meds. Which have kept me stable for years. I’m willing to do that. But that takes a lot of time. In the meantime because of akathisia I can barely function, can’t leave house cuz embarrassed by my akathisia symptoms and cannot sleep because of akathisia.
Pdoc refuses to give me sleep aid. He refuses to prescribe meds used to treat akathisia.
So I have a severe mental illness—bipolar.
Sleep deprivation triggers bipolar.
Meds can keep bipolar episodes from being triggered.
Akathisia can lead to suicide.
Is my Pdoc an asshole or what????

@Jeoparady, welcome to the bipolar forum! You are totally right in being upset about the akathisia and your doctor's unwillingness to help you combat it. If your psychiatrist will truly do nothing, I suggest you start looking for a new one. You should NOT have to suffer the torture, and I know from personal experience that akathisia can get to that point. You are correct that you deserve to either be prescribed some medication to ease the suffering, or be offered another possible solution. Another solution might be a new medication to replace the one that gives you the akathisia. I, personally, see that as a good option if akathisia controlling medications are not tolerable or reasonable.

I've experienced akathisia from three different medications I took in the past. They included Zyprexa (olanzapine), Abilify (aripiprazole), and Geodon (ziprasidone). I know these meds don't give everyone akathisia, though. The Zyprexa was stopped quickly, partly because of the akathisia, but also massive weight gain. The Abilify was stopped mostly because it didn't control my mania well enough. Geodon was stopped mostly because it gave me the worst akathisia I've ever experienced. Plus, it started to poop out a bit. In the end, I was glad to be transitioned off of Geodon, but as I was, I had another antipsychotic's dose increased. I wasn't just taken off of medications. That would have been a dangerous and stupid move.

I agree with Soupe, there is absolutely no reason for you to suffer like that. I'm not sure what the hesitation to help from your psychiatrist is, but it seems almost unethical. I hope you find relief soon. I don't have any practical advice other than definitely consider a psychiatrist that is working on your behalf.

Yep, adding my voice to the choir. No reason you can’t get treatment for that side effect!

Welcome Jeoparady! Here's my experience: I had a doctor prescribing psych meds, I was her patient for about 6 months. She refused to prescribe AP's, refused Cogentin, and refused any sleep meds. 3 weeks ago I went into a complete breakdown and I'm still not re-stabilized, I'm still struggling.

I should have dropped that miserable, mean doctor after our first appointment. Any psychiatrist or psych med provider who leaves you suffering is BS. I can't suggest strongly enough that you find a different psychiatrist ASAP.
