Hi, I’m a newbie here (have been reading posts for a few months now though). Last October I was inpatient at a psych ward and since I’ve been out, I have been in depression and denial about being diagnosed Bipolar. I recently weaned off of all my meds (Abilify and Lamictal) because they made me cry all the time. Has anyone had a withdrawn feeling in life after being inpatient? I kinda relate it to being in an unrealistic world with no responsibilities (which was nice and I actually enjoyed my stay) and then getting thrown back into the real world. I just can’t pin point why I’m experiencing this depression and I’m hoping that it will soon end.

Did your doctor wean you off your meds? Are you seeing a therapist and do you have a pdoc?
I'm just concerned.

Hi muddychick!
Your feelings of depression are quite common after being an inpatient. I had an emergency appendectomy Jan 15 with a 10 day hospital stay. (I am Bipolar2 Rapid cycler).... and am STILL in a depressive episode. The feelings you describe "being taken care of" "no responsibilites is also common. Once you get back into your "home" routine, you will eventually feel better and cope better. I did within a few days of being @ home. I returned to work 4 weeks after the surgery. I caution you about stopping ALL your meds! This should be supervised by your PDoc...please make an appointment to see him/her ASAP! Grace03

Hey. I have had the same feelings after leaving inpatient. Can you ask your doctor about a partial day program? That has helped me, therefore it seems like a step thing, not a reality shock all at once.
Also, I usually don't go right back to work. I give myself time to adjust to trying to do shopping and cleaning, etc. It is a shock. Most people feel like this. Hang in there. ![]() |
