Hi,

For so long now I have known my Primary Diagnosis was Bipolar, only never could get an answer as to what type.

So the other day when my case manager / T / had me to read my treatment plan for this 6 month time period I wrote down the 4 diagnosis codes from the treatment plan. So then I Looked up the first code in the code place here.

296.62 -is the first on my Axis 1 thing.

It is Bipolar 1 Disorder Most recent Episode Mixed.
and /Moderate/

I do feel better knowing which type of Bipolar I am so I can study it more better.

Also 300 - Anxiety Disorder NOS - not sure what that one means.

And 314.01 - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity / Predominatly Hyper / Impulse type

The forth one I feel they are full of lies and it is not any part of me. They just gave me that diagnosis so they could get more funding out of me. I told this to the case manager. She could not agree or disagree.

I feel alot better knowing the 3 true diagnosis than being not knowing what disorders I have, yet still so much to learn. Just wanted to share that relief I have gotten from knowing the diagnosis and no longer being in the dark about what I have.

Thank you for reading this. If anyone has understanding or advice on these different diagnoses I would appreciate it--Thanks again

Hi Kris:
My psychologist told me not to put too much into the numerically labelled diagnoses. She said the coded system exists for insurance purposes only.

kris, NOS stands for Not Otherwise Specified. What it probably means is, you have problems with anxiety, but your symptoms don't quite fit the diagnostic criteria for the specified anxiety disorders, such as General Anxiety Disorder. As LMo said, these numbers are primarily for insurance purposes, so the "NOS" category allows someone to be treated even if their particular disorder does not quite fit all of the usual criteria.

I am glad you had a chance to see what your diagnoses were. Awhile back, I peeped at my chart to see mine (they don't write them on our treatment plans). It's important not to focus too much on the "labels," but I do think it can help understand your symptoms to know what your diagnosis is.

*hugs*
Jo

Thank you LMo & Jo,

The insurance part does makes sense, because when I go to the outpatient Lab for blood tests, the intake person at times has to call and get a 'code' for the disorder on the Doctors order sheet. They give her a number to put into the computer for my Insurance to cover the test, had forgot about that.

Also my T has told me not to obcess on the specific dx as it may cause more harm to me than good. So in a way it ends my age old question "what is my dx this year" as long as I do not obcess over it.

Thanks jo for the "NOS" definition it makes sense. They just probably narrow it down to one specific disorder.

Thank you both for reply Found out what type of bipolar-Finally! LMo Found out what type of bipolar-Finally! Jo Found out what type of bipolar-Finally!

The last time I was in the hospital my doctor told me that he often gives someone a diagnosis depending on how long they need to be in the hospital because insurance companies allot a certain number of days to each diagnosis. My primary diagnosis was major depression, so my insurance company allowed 7 days in the hospital. If I had needed more, my doctor would have changed the diagnosis to bipolar disorder nos. I guess that pdocs sometimes have to "play" with the codes to be able to give us appropriate care.

Take care,

Hi there, I agree it helps to know this stuff to help a person know the signs of possible episodes and to learn to have confidence in some meds. I am happy finding out has helped you.
NOS means not other specified, that usually is what I see on my pdoc bill, I too wondered what that meant, and then saw it broken down for DX and present status during that office visit.
Well, I am wishing you luck with this, I know none of us like having DXes butlearning about it and the things you can learn about yourself helps in so many ways Found out what type of bipolar-Finally!
