Hi, Billi here.

I was talking to my husband the other night and we both came to know for ourselves that we believe that the label "borderline personality disorder" just depresses me.

It doesn't help me.

Yes, I think it's good for such a group of symptoms to be realized and labeled. Yes.

But I looked up "borderline" in my Websters and it suggested that "borderline" might mean "not quite average" or "close to indecent".

So, for me, it felt like bpd was a label implying that I have an "indecent" "not quite average" personality.

I even wonder if the first doctor who made this label was feeling condescending toward the first patient with this disorder.

For me, a label like "condition" or "syndrome" or "mind-set", suggesting an illness, rather than a "personality" problem might work better for me.

and maybe another word instead of "borderline".

Just my thoughts.

I don't like feeling "indecent" or "below average".

What do you think?

Billi

I agree Billi I saw that you read my thread on labelling, I totally agree with you .... my T says every single person has traits of differing things such as histrionic, narcissistic etc etc etc, it's just when on particular issue for want of a better word invades more commonly, but I totally agree with the article you read being harsh .... is it any wonder MH has stigma? Words and their meanings (and extended meanings) are very important to me. I can relate when you say that the terminology depresses you. It depresses me as well.

Will it really make you feel any better about being diagnosed with BPD?

It was originally named "borderline" to indicate a the borderline between psychosis and neuroses-- because of the fragmented personality.

I read ad heard from my doc that they name " Borderline" is going to be chsngened in the coming years to something along the lines of " Emotion regulation/dyregulation disorder" or Emotion intensity disorder" . Alot of sites already use those names instead of borderline. Emotional Regulation disorder fits alot better in my opinion.

I hate labels too. I worked in a psychiatric hospital for about a year and I was totally appalled at how the mental health professionals and staff talked about the patients with borderline personality disorder. It's like they weren't looked at as individuals, but as manipulative people who couldn't be helped. It was so sad and SOOO frustrating.

Wow...sooo much better.... Somehow, this name "feels" much scarier. If they only would have left out the word unstable.

*sigh*

Ugh.
I still like Complex PTSD better.

"emotionally unstable" and "emotional regulation". Still sounds, to me, very condescending.

Thank you everyone.
