Hey everyone,
In a few weeks I have my first psychiatrist appointment since 2000 and I def need to be put on meds,i would have done this much sooner but i couldn't afford it. Anyways, the meds are expensive without insurance so I'm prety much limited to the walmart $4 prescription plan with what i can choose. The ones on there that they have are(ssri's) Prozac,Celexa, and Paxil, they also have a few trycylics aswell. I can't keep on going back to switch meds and i know everyone reacts differently to each med but what should be my first choice? It mainly for the mood swings, impulses, all things borderline....I'm a recovery Bulimic as well. I sure hope this guy I'm going to knows about BPD,hes in his 70's....hes my BF's shrink which is why I'm not being charged full price.

Everybody is different, so you might have to try them all. However, tricyclics, though my personal favorite for treatment of depression, do increase your appetite and I would not use them for years on end, as this could possibly, possibly led to hallucinations. That's usually after years. Norpramine generic - can't remember what generic name is - is the least sedating of the tricyclics. Prozac has success with some people, flops with others - either putting them to sleep or making them run amuk. lol. Celexa and Paxil both target the brain neurotransmitter Serotonin [as do tricyclics, come to think of it, but in a different way]. I am not sure whether either of these also targets the neurotransmitter Norepinephrine, as some of the newer atypical antidepressants [SSRI's/SSNRI's] do.

There are lots of meds out there. No meds are known to treat BPD.
Imo, what the doctor prescribes depends upon what he diagnoses as a core difficulty for you. Anxiety, depression, etc. Tricyclics do work pretty well for depression mood swings. I take a med that works on 2 neurotransmitters, Effexor XR. Not sure if it (or it's brother) on the $4 deal. Probably not. ![]() Hope that you get some relief soon! Shez |

Hi there,
Just how bad are your mood swings? I am wondering if that has been discussed with you..... Anti-depressants are good short term(or they where for me).......but didn't last for long in their effect..... The best combination I found was lithium and thorazine(or seroquel or other anti-psychotics).......but I was extremely violent and my mood swings where horrendous.......so they had to control me somehow!! Maybe an anti-psychotic/mood stabiliser? Have you got any of those on your prescription system? An anti-depressant is a good place to start. I have been on over 15 different types, with different outcomes. Paxil I have not tried. Feel free to ask any questions, babe.......medication selection is an important decision. Take care and let us know how you go ![]() Michah

The Great news is there are many medications out there to help you with BPD!!
Your PsychDr. may use combinations & different dosages of these meds. Patience is necessary. It may take time to find the right medication that is best for you. I take Prozac, Effexor & Seroquel for ~ 3 1/2 yrs. I am v. thankful for my meds (they work super for me), most of all they allow me to work on the DBT & CBT therapy skills & techniques which help me live a happier life! Live & Love, Holmes |
