Or at least that's how the old saying goes. That is not the case for those of us with BPD. Music can have a profound affect on our moods. When I am driving and a heavy metal song is playing I find I am more aggressive. While others bring me down and I contemplate suicide. Some times I a devoid of emotion and the music has no effect at all. Post a song and the emotion it induces.
Thanks for this!

Genesis, "Land of Confusion" -> Determination
Sarah McLachlan, "Fear" -> Protectiveness

Couldn't stop at one.

Awesome thread.....Hmm I am a rocker chick...Luv the heavier medal usually when I am driving Linkin park what not, however then that leads to more aggressive driving.

Also Metallica but then depending if it's faster I can use that when I am lifting weights on a good day (those have been rare) Slows songs suicidal.

Genesis (luv them) Or Phil Collins makes me depressed and thinking about my life and how my relationships are or what I could have done better?

any old 80s 90's music makes me want to dance laugh...

Don't do country sorry...No offense

Classical makes me think my mind kinda feels like it's being invaded?

Opera emotional

Okay I could go on way longer Apologizes everyone

No need to apologize. In fact thank you. Heavy metal makes me drive faster too and more aggressive too. I don't even realize I'm doing it.

I know the idea that I can be in such a trance with music even makes things like writing in my journal so much more powerful? Often makes me wonder what would happen if like I had certain music playing during therapy? Ha!!! Of course if I knew it would happen I am sure protective walls would go up to protect myselves lol...Interesting thought though? Or if I try to do a memory tree which I have had to do, now that I think of of I do it with music....Hmm You have me really thinking...GOOD THREAD!!!!

Nirvana strikes such a chord with me. No pun intended (really). This man(Kurt Cobain) was in so much pain. albiet physical pain but pain just the same. So no matter what mood I am in listening to Nirvana brings me comfort. I don't know why. I gravitated to his music instantly. I bought all his albums. something in his voice. You could hear the anger, the sadness...

Do you think maybe cuz you know his end result that you identify with how you want to feel maybe more so??? Okay for instance hmm There was this book I was starting to read...But because at the preface I knew the author had commited suicide like I just empathized and felt way more connected and it triggered me more into a trance then I think it would of if I had learned that later even though you would have known she was heading that way thru out the book make sense? Like your drawn to his music more so cuz you can hear his anger, pain, sadness cuz you know were he's heading cuz you know already what happened? Ugh sorry I may just be rambling???

First your not rambling. second Yes and No. I felt a connection with the music before he died. After he died it just made me connect even more. But i do see what you mean.

LOL,

I seem to be rambling all over....It's so early here 9pm and I know no school for kids tomorrow free day whoot whoot and I can sit here while the kids watch Chicken Run whoo hoo my son playing the drums...Ahhh...Life!!

No totally I luv that kind of music...Anything like I said that can allow the mind to sore and just go off... Like I said this is a topic I have brought up with T allot...I mean I even had this discussion with husband yesterday, like when t.v. never get's turned on and music is on all day long, man things that get done are remarkable depending on the music? I mean they say OKAY On allot of my exercise videos (cough, cough) Music is a mood regulator....It's true depending on what your listening too you know? So your topic is so prevalent here!!!

I want to get back to this, but at the mo, here's my most recent experience: I drive 5 hours to see my therapist, and five hour back (over on Thursday, back on Friday). On the way to....I listen to a little music, but only stuff I know REALLY well and that will fade into the background while I panic about what I'm going to talk about in therapy, or while I try to organize the chaos. On the way home? I usually won't turn on music at all...It would be too much, exhaust me, and I am trying so hard to make sense of what just happened in therapy (one hour--usually over on Thursday; and an hour and a half on Friday)....the music trigger too much emotion, and I'm on overload!

Wow,

That's incredible dedication to you that you drive such a distance to see your T!!!! That's amazing.... Music is what helps me focus my thought's so that I can hear just or align sometimes what I need to have more in the forefront. Now I don't know for me if that's because I also suffer from DID too, and there's always so much chaos and noise that I have to drown out other noises to really get function? I am not sure how it all works still (scratches head).....In fact until clueless brought it up, I hadn't much thought about it....My family has always been really musical, and my kids are very musical....Dunno...

The Unnamed Feeling by Metallica - Anger, hopelessness, depression
High Hopes by Pink Floyd - Longing, isolation...
Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles - Happiness!

It's crazy how music can have such a profound effect on our moods. Metallica can be very dangerous for me when I'm in a bad state of mind. Also, anything of Pink Floyd's Division Bell makes me feel like I belong in the loony bin.

Club music makes me drive like a maniac. It can put me in a good, beaty type mood and I can be quite productive.

Jewel and Sarah McLachlan and Enya relax me if I'm kind of stable, but if I'm depressed, they can make things worse. But it's during those times I tend to listen to that music, so it becomes a vicious circle.

SO, for me it depends on what mood I'm in initially. If I'm depressed, club music will drive me crazy.
