so i've been meaning to post a proper update for a while now.. but i can't right now. but i need some advice.. so i am posting this quickly and then i'll try to update properly tonight.
so i have just started at tafe and my rehab worker linked me in with the disability support services. i had an appointment with the lady who looks after mental health. she asked about what had been going on and everything like that. she also said if i wanted i could see someone in the counselling unit too. now my first reaction is no, i already have a DBT T and a private psych. but i've been thinking and whenever I talk to my DBT T we have to follow the structure thing (meaning life threatening behaviours then self harm then therapy interfering behaviours then life interfering behaviours or something like that) which mean that all we talk about are the first 2 or 3. meaning we don't actually really talk about my thoughts/feelings/issues that are causing these things. and even if i know something is going to become a problem we don't get the time to talk about it before it's a huge issue, even though some things i feel like if we had talked about them before they got huge then they wouldn't have got huge. and with my private psych i only see her every two weeks and a lot of that time is talking about things that are stopping me attending DBT or being truthful in DBT. so now i'm thinking maybe having someone to talk to about the issues before they turn into huge problems might help.. but i don't want to seem too needy and attention seeking because there are other people who don't have the support that i do who need to talk to the counsellors.. so now i'm stuck. any suggestions/ideas/anything would be good! thanks! |

Okay, you're kind, thoughtful, & generous--not pushy. Great. Those aren't the issues.
Do you want to stop small problems from becoming big one's? You do? See someone in the counseling unit too. I'm just summarizing your post, Quiet Onexx. You've presented the situation here so clearly that I can't see any decent response but yes. ![]() ![]()

I see a dbt t, but we actually usually just talk about what i need to and then throw in dbt stuff as we go along. If I were in your situation, I would go for seeing the other counselor too

Wel I don't see how talking to someone could hurt. If you are disatisfied with your current DBT, can you perhaps do both?
Don't feel bad about talking to the counselor. That's their job and they do it cuz they wanna help people. Good luck and keep us updated. |

thanks for replying
i spoke to the disability support lady i'm linked in with (V) and she recommended a counsellor for me to see. so i have an appointment for tuesday next week. the thing that makes me feel awful is that V said that she recommended S because she is a very senior psychologist who has experience with difficult cases... am i really that f**ked up? |

If you are not working well with your DBT therapist, aren't learning the basics of showing up and being truthful, I don't know that you will succeed in "talk" therapy? I would work on what I had, making it do the best job for me it can and then see if that was enough or I wanted to continue with something else.
