Has anyone heard of positive results of hypnosis regarding combat memories and reactions to those times?

Troy,

If I'm reading your question correctly, you are asking if hypnosis can help with PTSD and dealing with what the soldiers have been through. If I read the question correctly the answer is very much a YES.

Good ... so, how do we go about getting the hypnosis for our ptsd?

Can I learn hypnosis myself -- not as a professional, just as a tool to help ppl relax and unwind their stress levels?

Troy,

There are many ways for you to help yourself or others should you want to. Where do you live?

Thanks Doc ... Actually, I live somewhere else. I guess I'll pass on the hypnosis for now.

I received hypnotherapy at a military hospital. The techniques learned for self-hypnosis helped me manage my panic attacks.

they came out with this new treatment that seems to work for ptsd, it sounds like BS but supposedly it works. they pretty much flash lights of random intensity into your eyes (not like lasers or anything, just a miniature light show). i guess in simple terms it resets something in the brain, lets it reboot.

Is there any danger to hypnosis?

Is there a downside to being hypnotized by an amateur?

Can the hypnotist plant ideas or actions that are manifested years later?

While Rick can give you extensive answers, I'll give it a shot.

Hypnosis, in and of itself, is safe. Generally, you keep control and won't do anything you wouldn't in normal life.

Yes, when in the realm of hypnotherapy, it can have drawbacks if you do not see someone who is certified. Since you have memories that you haven't dealt with (your brain, that is) if someone who is an amateur connects with something that is traumatic, and doesn't know how to handle it, you can have big adjustments and reactions. There's no need for that.

However, self hypnosis is always safe because your brain (you) won't allow yourself to dig up anything you aren't ready for.

Few hypnotic suggestions are held beyond a few minutes after the session. If you want the suggestion to help you, though, then it can have lasting effect for the positive. Again, no suggestion that is beyond what you would allow when fully awake will take hold.

I think Sky did a very nice job at filling in..... Thanks.

Remember, All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The person you are working with is only the guide. There job is to lead you down the path to your goals. If they are not trained on the proper ways to do this, it may not be a good thing.

It's always a good idea to make sure the person your dealing with is highly certified and know's how to deal with what comes up. There are many times when things will come up out of no where and they need to know the proper way to deal with this.

Hypnotherapy and hypnotherapeutic techniques can be useful in aiding combat (or non-combat) related PTSD.

However, one of my own counselling students has reported good results from a more eclectic therapy involving such techniques as CBT; NLP and other therapeutic based practices.

There are many Hypnotherapists who use some CBT and NLP techniques with their hypnosis clients. They fit together so very well.
