i was looking for some written guidelines about what is and is not permitted as a chat topic, or conversation. i found a very well written and understandable report on the Forums, but nothing really on the Chats.

would it be possible to have a sticky with a list of things that are 'reportable', disallowed or grounds for warnings or banning ? here is the link to the forum post that i found helpful, as an example:

http://forums.psychcentral.com/rules...-8-2014-a.html

i realize this takes someone's thought and time, but not knowing that one is breaking some unwritten rule is, in itself, a trigger for me, and likely others.

thanks

The Community Guidelines apply to the entire website, so I don't see a need for any additional guidelines.

The guidelines use the word "forums". I can see for literal minded, concrete thinkers that would mean the forum and not necessarily chat.

Also, recent discussions here mention sexual talk in chat. I did not see anything specifically related to sexual topics in the guidelines. There is mention that there can not be anything of a sexual nature that would violate the law. There is mention of the use of a trigger icon for triggery topics. There's nothing specific about whether sexual topics are allowed or not.

To me the guidelines are well written and clear, but I believe it would be helpful to add a paragraph specifically related to chat.
Thanks for this!

This makes it pretty clear that there is to be no sexually explicit chats.

We are talking about guidelines.

It's impossible to list every single thing that will trigger another member.

Shall we agree to disagree?

Gus made a suggestion. I agreed. Some disagree that the change is needed. This forum is for us to provide feedback. All of us have done that. Let's see what the powers that be have to say.

Of course.

We talk about a myriad of topics on the forums (I'm including chat as part of the forums), so the chances of two (or more) people agreeing with each other 100% of the time is zero.

what started my thread is getting dinged for medical advice. i know that it is a common practice to talk about meds, both in the forums and in chat, as it is one of the things many people have in common. but i never knew that offering experience-based advice was against the rules.

also, there is the issue of posting links in chats, without telling what they are... too many shockers there. it's not allowed in the forums, why is it allowed in chat ?

many discrepancies between posting and chatting, Clarification Wanted.

I found these maybe these will help...

http://forums.psychcentral.com/chat-...hat-rooms.html

http://forums.psychcentral.com/chat-...hile-chat.html

http://forums.psychcentral.com/commu...uidelines.html

short version for those that cant click the links.... all rules\guidelines for the community forums are the same for the chat rooms and no sex talk allowed. flirting and such is allowed with one on one private chats between two consenting members in their own private chat rooms. (which I take to mean only two people in the chat room that is doing the sexual \flirting conversation and both in the chat room have to consent to having that flirting with each other conversation)

those that can create chat rooms are the appointed chat hosts and the chat hosts are responsible for maintaining order and what goes in in the chat rooms they open.

these links are located in the chat forum board called chat announcements with sticky\pinned to the top.

Im guessing for further clarification you would probably have to pm one of the mods or doc john since chat rules are an administrative issue.

Huh? I thought that Amanda's post was very relevant as it answered the original topic's question quite nicely.

your post asked what is and isnt allowed in chats... per the links I supplied, you will see that everything that is allowed on the community boards are whats allowed in chat, what is not allowed on the community boards are not allowed in chats. what will get you banned on the community boards are the same things that will get you banned in chat.

I did not make a list of what is reportable, allowed, disallowed because I saw you have been a member since 2010. based on the fact that you have been here for 5-6 years and have not been banned you pretty much know what is and isnt allowed and what you need to report. you just follow the same rules in chat that are for the community boards and you will be fine.

I think you should stick to talking about pretty much nothing because that is what is accepted. Hence I don't go. Maturity is what is required for a chat to be a success and it doesn't exist here.

There's a difference in offering one's advice and couching it as actual advice, versus telling other people directly what they need to do. Advice should always be couched in language that expresses it is your opinion only (hopefully based your actual experiences, not just something you read online).

Here's a simple example:

"Wow, I can't believe you're taking medication XYZ. That stuff will kill you. You should get off of it immediately!"

vs.

"I was taking XYZ medication for some time. I didn't find it all that helpful, and the side effects for me were really bad."

Sometimes we have members offering closer to the first example, rather than the second.

Yes, people should clearly explain what a link is going to when they post something to chat, just as they would do in the forums. In the forums, the forum software can convert a link into a video to give you an idea, too, of what it is before you click on it; unfortunately the chat software can't do that.

So please, if you're posting links in chat, make sure your fellow members know what they are linking to (music, video, etc.).

Thanks!
