I have a HP notebook which is about 18 months old now, I'm not sure how long these things are supposed to last.

Anyway, the sound has gone. Where's the sound gone? It's very odd because the sound still works if I plug the headphones in it but otherwise there is no sound. Where has it gone? The volume controls and all that say that it is working correctly, is there anywhere else I can look to find out where the sound is? Or do I need to go get it repaired?

Hey pegasus, this is my (attempt) to help...

Can you navigate to the Control Panel (usually Start menu) and find the "Sound & Audio Devices" section?

There should be a "Speakers Settings" ... Check to see if the Speaker Volume is up loud enough... if not, adjust that. If that doesn't solve the problem, click "Advanced" and see if the speaker setup is set to play through your speakers, and not a headset.

If that doesn't solve the problem, perhaps the speakers have "blown up" and need to be repaired.

you can actully mute your computer from your battery settings (in the control panel too.)
if you cant solve the problem from that place, go to the "Audio and sounds Devices " again and check out the state of the speaker that you are using(there are generally three or more optional speakers there.)

Do you still have the "drivers and utilities" CD that came with the notebook? I'd try reinstalling.

Too, there's an "advanced" setting on my volume conrol and it has a "speaker mute" checkbox opportunity buried in there.

if you have directx installed you can run a diagnostic check through there...open the start menu and go to run and enter dxdiag...from there you should be able to test your sound... Where's the sound gone?

Still haven't got any sound. Only works with headphones. Haven't got round to ringing HP yet, just been too busy, I guess I'll have to at some point, I really don't fancy sitting at the desk top when it goes for repair though. Where's the sound gone?
