Has anyone tried hypnosis as a form of therapy? Looks like it could help with desensitizing memories. I felt like EMDR was getting close to a hypnotic form of therapy.

my therapist does hypnosis. we use it quite a bit to deal with my alters. i chose her because i worked a couple times with another hypnotherapist for my anxiety and it went away for over three months. it has certainly lessened since i have been seeing her.

It just seems to make sense that hypnotherapy would work for some issues. I would much rather do something like that than medications and counseling.

Nope no way I would do it. But that's just me and my issues. Although talking in therapy is difficult I would do that 10x over instead of hypnotherapy. Trace why would you rather do it over therapy and medication? Are you wanting a 'quick fix' type thing?

Well with medication and counseling ...it's time consuming, expensive and the core issues are still there, you can forget a memory.
With hypnosis it would be quicker, more time efficient, and the core issues would still be there but you head would be rewired to not care. Just like hypnosis to stop smoking. The urge, desire to smoke is blocked. Why couldn't you block these desires to visit these memories?
Yes, I guess you could say it was a quick fix. Just as long as it would be a fix would be okay with me. Hypnosis doesn't work with everyone though.

I would so much rather do therapy and meds over hypnosis. Yes, therapy can be difficult but it's very cathartic to open up to someone you trust and have them listen and help you work though your feelings. Your memories will always be there but they don't have to control your life. Eventually the crisis of the mind will calm down and you can move past the difficult parts.

<<life is not just black and white. the peace is in the grey >>
I'm a very black and white thinker. I have a white house, black shutters, one white car, one black truck, black and white kitchen, house walls are white, with lgt gray carpet Need I say more? But yet my house is very colorful and easy to change the décor because most things go with Black and White, and gray.

I would still rather do hypnosis and try to erase the memories

I used to be such a black and white person! Everything was either great or it sucked terribly. My T has taught me to "live in the grey...the peace is there". And, as usual, she is right.

My home decor is also black and white, with a little purple and red in there...but mostly black and white. It's just my mind doesn't live in those 2 extremes anymore even though I physically do!

And for what it's worth...from what I have read about hypnosis, it doesn't erase your memories. In fact it brings up a ton of stuff...some of which you will remember after the session. Personally, I am scared to death of hypnosis! I am so afraid of what I will say!!!!!

I have never done hypnosis, been to afraid. I do not think I could handle being in someone's control, the thought terrifies me. I find psychotherapy and medication work best for me. From time to time we have to adjust my medication, but when I really work in therapy and get to the core of my issues I have had some healing. It is scary, but not nearly as scary to me as being under hypnosis.
Good luck in what ever you decide. Treatment is individual, whatever works for the person is good.

Hey RG , love your Avatar, so me Yes, each person has to find the best therapy way that they are comfortable with. If I found it easier to talk to someone f2f maybe this would not be an issue. But if someone could help lower my walls to allow my mouth to speak about painful issues this would be so much easier....I think, then suggest not to feel guilty after speaking of these things. Sometimes medications or alcohol makes the tongue loose but afterwards the guilt is so bad, not worth what was said. But yes, do what's comfortable for you by all means. And that may change with time as you feel more comfortable with talking about it. Good luck on your journey.

[COLOR="DarkOrchid"] Thanks Trace14, I like your avatar too....so cute.
I do understand about not being able to talk with someone face 2 face. I was that way for [U]years. Till I found the right therapist who helped me feel safe & was patient with me till I grew to trust her. Oh, another thing that helped me to get things out was to write about them, started just putting down words, not trying to form sentences or worry about grammar. Just let my words come out till I was able to really write about what was going on inside me....now I write all the time & write poetry. Well, I see I've written enough for now. Good luck to you too in your journey!!!

Yes, that's what people keep saying that I need to find a T that makes me feel safe and that I can trust. You are fortunate to have found such a T. I hope one day I can post that I found a T that will work with my very complex life and help get back on track. We all hope for that huh? Good luck to you too
