Reading some threads on here and wanted to make a thread to see who else is having a hard time getting trauma specific services:

Such as:
Therapists
In-patient programs
Intensive Outpatient programs
Support groups

Barriers Insurance:
Medicare
Medicaid
Uninsured

I would like to hear your experiences(City/state/Country) and how maybe we all can brain storm to get better trauma services.

My story:
Barrier is medicare not many providers to begin with and not that many trained in trauma. I live Cleveland Ohio nothing for trauma specific services IOP/IP and support groups. Makes recovery very difficult!!

The mental health system is broke on many levels. Just as the health care system. With treating trauma I've found that many say they treat trauma but most do not, they may be able to do some good for PTSD but for multiple traumas they do more harm than good. I've found the forums and online community has helped as far as a group therapy to discuss different issues. There's online counseling but that is self pay. I had one counselor who was not claiming to be a trauma specialist but she was very good. So getting that right therapist is paramount. Keep trying.

Maybe this site will turn up something? You can search by state or by topic. https://www.benefits.gov/

Or NAMI? I'd try NAMI if i need those services.

Sorry I don't have any experience to share except long ago. I tried to get low income therapy for one of my children and they said with my discount, it was $80 an hour, and this was decades ago. I made something like $11 an hour back then.

I remember not paying my utility bills to get services or medical care for a number of years. Robbing peter to pay paul. I pay cash for my therapy now and my therapist gives me a generous discount.

What have you tried so far?

It's sad resources are so limited.

I agree mental health is broken, However one thing I notice in my community there is an abundance of addiction services to fight the opioid epidemic. From all my research and experience trauma is at the core of addiction. You can't fix the addiction without dealing with the trauma - that is just a set up to fail and relapse. I agree many say they can treat trauma but ptsd vs complex trauma is a very different treatment model. Without the proper training it can re-traumatize the person. Trust been there done that and why I am very picky in choosing a therapists. I had NAMI help me finding a provider and they were upset I didn't take the only Medicare provider at one of their medicaid only agencys. The women had no clue about trauma. I asked if she was familiar with Bessel van der Kolks book and she said anyone can write a book. SMH LMAO and apparently anyone can be a therapists too. That helps me red flag therapists these days...smh lol. My point I shouldn't have to settle for therapists bc they take my medicare I deserve to find some one who is skilled in trauma.

My point is we need more services avail just like addiction and every other dang mental illness.

Trauma is so underratated. But we have the Ace Study. We have the Dunedin Study.Studies | Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health & Development Research Unit - DMHDRU

It's obvious trauma treatments are in the public's best interest. But it is difficult to find a trauma therapist even if you are not on Medicare, so that would be so much more challenging. Most therapists it seems what to treat the worried well.

Yes, we need more services. I believe the newest bill out included paying for the education of psychologists and psychiatrists. But if they don't take insurance like many now, it won't make much a difference.

I took ambien already, hope this doesn't read as woozy as I feel now.

I think if they ever put CPTSD in the DSM that more attention may be placed on trauma therapy. So far Pete Walker by far has the best grasp of multiple trauma. Have you looked at any of the Kati Morton videos? She has some on trauma and about anything else Mental health. Plus she has such an upbeat personality it's just fun to watch her
