One of my least favorite things is getting emotional at work. I am not even always sure what triggers it. I really needs some good strategies for calming myself down so I am not a wreck in front of my co-workers. Anything that works for anyone else in similar situations?

Best Wishes,
Avian

there is one technique I know of that is kind of discrete. it is called tight fist. you take all your emotions and send them down into a tightly clenched fist. then you loosen that fist and imagine all that tension, anxiety, whatever you are feeling draining down into the earth. feel the relaxation take over your body as your fist relaxes. you can do it over and over. hope it works. take care.

If some thing is getting you emotional at work, find out what it is. Identify it, then decide what you need to do, if it is a bad feeling. Such as seeing your supervisor or counseller.

I suffered from a similar situation when I was working. When I started to feel overwhelmed I usually went into the ladies' room and into the handicap accessible stall and I would try to just breathe, taking deep breaths. As I inhaled I would try to count to 10 and count to 10 again as I exhaled. I would also try to stretch. My bouts were due to overwhelming anxiety. There were days I probably spent more time in the ladies room than I did at my desk. When I was in a situation where I couldn't get to the ladies room I would quietly do my breathing.
Other times I would inhale and picture the exhale starting at the top of my head, working its way down, taking all the crap with it and out through my toes. After doing this a few times I would start to feel my body relax.

I just wanted to say that I can totally relate...I can cry at the drop of a hat. And over the most ridiculous things, both good and bad.

I wish that I had some coping techniques to add to the already great ones.

I've had this happen to me at work and it's very distressing :/. I think it's the stress of the job that causes it in me. For me, I learn to recognize when I've had enough and leave. Sometimes it only hurts you to stay and continue feeling emotional. If it's not too bad I'll use distraction, try tackling an easy task you know you can do. It'll give you a sense of accomplishment hopefully and you can ease out of the overwhelmed state!

Thank you everyone! I will be sure to try some of these techniques. They all seem to have some definite value.

Best Wishes
