I've lost my identity and don't know who I am anymore.
I look in the mirror and don't recognize the image staring back at me. I've been through a rough time with anxiety and depression, what the heck is going on? ![]() ![]() |

I feel similar, Jolisse. Every time I think in the first person I realize I'm thinking of who I used to be, not the wrecked shell I am now. I don't know who I am.

Severe anxiety can cause those feelings.
Does your reflection literally look back as if it is another person staring at you?

If you are in Therapy, the loss of identity is due to change, as you lose old ways of feeling, As this happens you are losing your old self. A new self is emerging that you do not know yet.

What should you look like, Jolisse? : )
Your physical body & appearance are not a reflection of your highest identity and true nature. I recall at some point having feelings of not identifying with my physical appearance and body. At the time it was a subtle sense of thinking, "This doesn't feel like me". What ended up happening over time was that I went through a period of significant internal (spiritual) growth that served to change my state of awareness (and being) in a positive, transformative way. I arrived at the realization that I was not my physical self (or body), and that my true identity/nature transcends these temporary aspects. In hindsight I was able to make sense of those subtle feelings of not feeling like myself when I looked in the mirror. It was a very subtle sense of intuitive 'knowing' that there was higher identity/nature waiting for me to discover. Anxiety & depression can sometimes precede significant spiritual growth. Also feelings of being 'empty' and losing your sense of physical identity (or your 'former self'). Let me know if any of these conceptualizations resonate or not... Hope you gain some insight soon as to what is transpiring in your life and that you can make progress moving forward. Try not to feel attached to or obligated to conform to a former image/identity of yourself, re-invent yourself... Life is about change : )
