Some people are not alone but feel alone anyway because others around them are not nice people or are selfish.

I won't be alone for Christmas this year. I have family. But I understand feeling alone with others, bc that was my predicament for years before.

I will be around the forum this Christmas too though. Sending hugs and support.

I will be alone for Christmas too.

What I hate about Christmas it the maniacal commercialization for it, that starts right around Thanksgiving.

How effed up it is to me, that people have turned a religious holiday into a commercialization bonanza.

Imagine my duress as a 24 year old when I went on a Chinese radio show the year that I lived in China, where I had to explain what Christmas is to the Chinese radio listeners. My British co-host was snickering and the two Chinese cohosts shook their heads and raised their eyebrows, because they had to translate what I said in English to Mandarin. It was like listening to two speeding trains collide into each other at top speed. A total trainwreck.

How do you explain the connection of Santa and reindeer (the commercialization) to the birth of Jesus (the religious holiday). It was a worse nightmare than giving a speech while naked. I still have the cassette tape of that radio show episode and it's hysterically funny to listen to.

Being alone at Christmas sucks when you associate your feelings of self-worth to the maniacal (there's that word again) way retailers have commercialized a religious holiday. Christmas - it's a season for spending! Your traditional values have morphed into showing what someone means to you based on what type of gift you give someone at Christmas. So dumb!!

Here's a list of great anti-Christmas carols (some are hilarious, some are tawdry, some are spot on!) Enjoy! And effe Christmas!

I agree. It is maniacal. It’s not just the retailers. We all buy into it... pun intended I guess.... we believe the myth that we must create a magical Christmas. I’m going to replace the word magical with maniacal.

Do you have any ideas for anti-Christmas activities? I want to do volunteer work on Christmas Day.

Yes, we buy into it because as consumers we can't escape the commercialization since its everywhere we go. Christmas carolers at the grocery store. Christmas wreathes and trees in every retail store and gas station and school and hospital and home and church. There's no escape! Like that Rowdy Roddy Piper movie, "They Live!" (it's campy as hell but the screenwriter John Carpenter was brilliant the way he jibed how we're all prisoners of commercialism in society). The movie is a commentary on Reagan's America of the 1980s that is still relevant today. It tanked at the box office because its relevant message was not one people wanted to be reminded of: the rich control our country and the rest of us are indentured servants.

And all commercialized (religious) holidays have been mythologized and the lines between the original religious reason the holiday was created to the maniacal commercialization of said religious holiday in order to exploit it to boost retail sales. More horrifying than a Steven King horror story.

My Christmas activities revolve around gorging carbs and sweets and watching movie marathons and posting online.

I think it's awesome that you want to volunteer on Christmas day. You may want to contact food shelves and homeless shelters and churches to see where you can join their volunteer staff.

For the most part I will be alone. My husband will come by (we live separately) to take me to dinner at a diner we like, so that will be about 2 hours. Aside from that, just another day with my precious kitties.

I'll definitely be here.

I'm pretty much a loner anyway for a number of reasons. Then somewhat recently my aunt & uncle died, & my cousins moved very far away. I always spent the holidays with them. So I'm feeling sad & lonely about this holiday season. I wish the rest of you peace, & your own special joy, wherever you can find it. And I'm wishing the same for myself. We must all hang in there. This, too, shall pass.

what makes me laugh is how brainwashed people are to feel something is wrong if they do not spend as much as others. The papers here have features what the average person spends. My late mum used to be amazed at the way people shopped xmas eve like it was the v last shopping day... Ever

@LonelyMan it's absolutely insane the brainwashing done on consumers by all the holiday marketing. How are we not all walking around with sunglasses on, like our fellow human Roddy Piper did in the John Carpenter movie, "They Live!" awake enough to see the truth. That is, advertisers brainwash us every day 24/7 to feel and think and act the way THEY want us to. We are psychologically manipulated and don't even realize it!

"Advertising creates a void in your self-worth." (from the video) This definitely applies to Christmas retailers marketing schemes.

What if there was no advertising?

Although this is a serious topic, thanks StreetcarBlanche for putting it into perspective, very funny! Would love to send to some of my relatives who think it's all about cost of presents, outdoing each other, being hypocritical. Forget it!!

Was originally spending Christmas alone, but now elderly mother and I are together. Food from a good store (M&S), getting up when we like. She's requested a jumbo crossword puzzle to get our teeth into.

Wishing you all peace during this time of over-eating, drinking too much, family arguments, road rage, supermarket rage and all the other joys!!

Seriously, take care. I'll be on here over the festive season. Yes, some of us can feel sad we're not included in festivities for a variety of reasons. Others welcome a time of reflection, to escape the pressures of daily life. Whatever the reason try to gain some positives from knowing you have support.

i love that film They Live. The fight is famous in movie history, is it the longest? I do not believe in the extreme claims made about subliminals though

It amazes me that people can get so upset if they do not have a certain sauce or the turkey is slightly burned. It is cult like thinking. It's just a ******* turkey

Wiki says re the fight

"its near six-minute alley brawl between the protagonists makes appearances on all-time lists for best fight scenes."

I have it here might watch again
