I really wish i'd never mentioned voices to my counselor now! I really don't know how to explain it. Also i need to tell my friend but don't know how to do it! Please help!

Hi Lara,

Please try to reduce the stress and anxiety you're feeling about this. I think the most important thing to tell the psychologist about the voices is to first put them in context. I do think it's probably something he needs to know as it helps to form a better picture of who you are. He's not going to think you're crazy and I'm sure he's heard much much "worse" cases but if it's bothering you hearing them then whatever you can tell him will help form the basis of your treatment which is what he's being paid to do.

About your friend, that's tougher because even recent posters have said how they confided some things in a friend only to have that person break contact with them. It all depends on what kind of friend it is and how your relationship is now. Does she/he really need to know about it at this time or can it wait to see how your treatment goes? I think regarding friendships it's often times better to wait for a while and only tell them if they really need to know. Many people still just don't understand mental illness and are afraid of it and people who openly admit to being afflicted by them.

I'm sorry if my words are not much help but I do hope you can relieve some tension before the appointment. If you need me, PM me my friend.

Chris

Sometimes I've had tough things to tell my doctors, and so I write it down in a letter or a list and then just hand it to them. Then they read it and ask specific questions and I answer them. The letter just kind of "breaks the ice"
He won't think you are crazy. He will see that you have a symptom that is very distressing for you and will want to help you minimize it as much as he possibly can.
He is on YOUR side. He wants to HELP you. He is there to EVALUATE you, NOT TO JUDGE you. Remember that.
And remember to breathe. IN and OUT slowly. It will help with the anxiety. Deep breaths. In thru your nose and out through your mouth. Slowly. It will calm you.

Hi, LaraKeziah! I'm hesitant to post because you've already received good advice. I'll try to be concise.

You can help out your counsellor by making a few notes beforehand; I suspect they'll want to know about times, contexts, contents, durations, etc. BUT...ultimately it is the counsellor's responsibility (not yours) for getting to the bottom of things.

Wait. Let things clear and take better shape. Then, when you feel comfortable with the information and yourself and your friend, you can reveal as much or as little as you want, and do so all at once or little-by-little over time. You're in charge.
