My depression started in my teens, probably around 16 or 17. My parents also thought I was just another angry teenager. I was finally diagnosed with major depressive disorder at 22 and prozac saved my life. My 2nd episode started about 14 months ago when I was 30 and I started feeling okay about 3 months ago, so it lasted about a year. This time was a bit easier because I recognized a lot of the signs of depression myself and was able to go to the doctor proactively and ask for medication and find a therapist to talk to. But "easy" is relative.

I was first depressed mildly at about 13. Then it got worse from there. A major depressive episode by 16. I didn't realize anything was wrong until I was 17 and suicidal. I am depressed much more of the time than not since then.

I think it started when I was 12 or 13 and then lasted for maybe a year (it's hard to remember). I was untreated then. Later on from the age of 26-27 I had another bout of depression, though my therapist at the time told me she thought I had low-level depression for a long period of time prior to coming to her which seems accurate. It's hard to pinpoint the age when that period of depression started but it went on for a long time. Now I am 29 and started getting depressed again in July but I recognized it more quickly this time around so I'm getting help earlier..

40 years now. And my new psychiatrist can't believe that I'm depressed every day.

My first episode in 1994, then a good 10 year run. Currently, off and on (more on) for the past 6 years. It sucks.

started around 11 or maybe it was there for a lot longer but i never noticed. i just think it started at that age because that was the age i lost the will to leave my home to go to school. that was 4 in a half years ago ^^; and i still don't leave my home to go to school. i i haven't left the house since.. lemme see.. probably sincee October 19th. So over a week consistently so far.. i dont know when im going out next, sometimes it's over a month before i leave the house. so far, my next appointment is November 9th (dentist) :l if i walk out this door before then it'll most likely be against my will.

Looking back, I would say I have been depressed since I was 9 or 10. I remember having suicidal thoughts when I was 11, but no one believed me. I got dx in 2007 and had my first hospitalization in Nov 2007. Was doing ok until earlier this year. Had 3 hospitalizations in 5weeks. I am fairly stable now and we are tweeking my meds just slightly. It has been 5 1/2 months since my last hospitalization.

From around 6 years old didnt know what it was and my parents just said I was funny in the head. Have had suicide thoughts since I was around 8. Attempted it twice but woke up. Had a break down in my late 20s only then was I diagnosed as having depression. Been struggling with it since then. I am in my 50s now and finding it harder and harder to cope. I just want to fall asleep and not wake up. I have had times when I am able to cope and be positive and not sucomb to this awfulness but from the end of last year it hit me and I cannot see a way out. Its like I am in a pit and cant get out.

It's hard to tell, but I think it started around 6 or 7. I wasn't formally diagnosed until my early 30s.

First depressive episode at 13...my parents thought it was just a phase...didn't start taking meds until 17...they help a lot. I've tried to get off of them a few times before thinking maybe it will be different, that I can cope now, but all the symptoms come back every single time, just as bad as ever. I'm just thankful for medication...the only thing that makes me normal...whatever normal is.

When I was about 15 or 16, that's probably when I first started showing signs of depression. By the time I was 17, I was thinking about death and suicide. Then when I went to college I felt better for a while. Had another (very brief) episode when I was around 21, I think. After that, I was okay until a couple of years ago. Depression was slowly building for about a year before I realized what was happening and sought counseling. Tried that for a while and it helped somewhat, but earlier this year when I started sinking down lower than ever, I realized I needed more help. That's when I started on medication, and it's been a lifesaver. I wouldn't say that I feel terrific now, but this is actually the best I ever remember feeling in my entire life. I'm now 28.

My first 'episode' was in second year of high school when I had to do my first exam....My parents didn't even realise....I couldn't study because I was crying so much..I would've been around 14 I think and in my late 50s now...
Been like it my whole life in one degree or another.. |

I have never not been depressed. Started around 4 or 5. Diagnosed 40 years later - therapist said "you've been depressed for so long you wouldn't know what it's like not to be".
Ebbs and flows. Has been very, very bad for the past year. Always alone and isolated, filled with sadness. But, on the upside I have very strong coping skills that make me appear to be someone that I'm not. So I only share things here - at least I'm trying to share here. |

This frog of little brain has absolutely no idea. Being somewhere between antique and artifact they didn't have depression when I was young. Thanks to modern medical practices I lost my memory of my adult life. Probably forever is my best guess.
