I used medicine at the beginning of my mental disease, it did not help me much... so i quit .....recently a friend suggested me to take anti-depressive medicine again, said it would be good for me.
I m wondering if i shall do it ? I feel the root of my depression and PTSD is in need of a real good counselor, just never could be found so far in my place. Hmm....... what is your experience and advice in this? thanks |

Well, my experience with medication has been good. Luckily for me, it has worked for me well when I've tried it. I have made the mistake several times in my life of going off once I started feeling better. The depression/anxiety would always come back eventually, with the "good" periods getting shorter and shorter. I will no longer try to go off medication.
You probably know this, but medication can change your brain chemistry so you can feel better. If it did not help much before maybe it was just the wrong one? My experience also is that medication helped me take the edge off my depression so I could do better work in therapy. Now I think my MI has progressed and I need medication still but not necessarily therapy... And if you could find a good counselor that would be great, but it sounds like you aren't having success there. Some people on here (not me unfortunately) may be able to offer advice on how to find a counselor. So I guess that's the long way of saying I would give meds a shot if you are having a lot of trouble with depression (or whatever MI you have...). Thanks for posting and I hope to keep hearing from you on here. ![]()

Littlefish asked for our experience, so I'm certainly going to give her MINE.
I started with therapy, and had several sessions, and my therapist sent me to my doctor to put me on an antidepressant cause I was severely depressed. Then I went BACK to the therapist and continued with therapy, which did me alot of good! I've been depressed since I was a small child, so I've been on antidepressants for almost 40 years, and they're worked great for me. Some antidepressants have worked better than others. You have to remember that most A/Ds take 6 weeks to begin working. The only one I know of that doesn't take that long is Cymbalta, and that takes between 2-3 weeks to start working. You have to be patient and wait for them to work -- you can stop taking them because you get tired of waiting. That could cause some serious probems. So talk with your doctor about these medications. See what he has to say about putting you on them. He might have a different idea about it. Best of luck and take care. Hugs, Lee ![]() |
