Since I became depressed, I have been in the process of losing my job. This means that we will have to rely on my wife's single income. We can no longer afford to remain in the house, which is very costly to maintain, even though we are nearing paying off the mortgage. So we are thinking about selling the house and renting an apartment.

To sell the house now means big financial losses, but even worse is the overwhelming feeling to move out of the house. There is so much to clean, to dispose, to package. On top of it, we will have to change the neighborhood and do not know where to settle. Physically, I am also getting very weak because of the chronic insomnia.

So, please, should we move now? What do you think? We have a 8-year old kid and we are really in a survival mode. We are foreigners in this country and have no close friends nearby (probably one reason why I fell into depression).

Thank you very much!

Wow, that does sound pretty darn stressful!

I am sorry that you lost your job. Times certainly are tough. Does your wife make enough to keep you and your family afloat for a while? If so, comfort yourself with that fact. While it isn't easy or fun, it CAN be done.

You will eventually find a job that is a better fit for you, perhaps even better paying. Who knows?? Is your family supportive if you do run into really tough times and need a helping hand? I know that it isn't ever easy to go and ask for help. But, sometimes, it's exactly what we need to help us through to a greener time in our lives.

In my experience, now is NOT a good time to sell. Now is a great time to buy! Maybe you should sell for less than you paid, but buy well. Or, maybe your/her family can help meet payments for a little while, until you get another job? It's a personal and family decision, that you two need to make together. Hopefully, you'll gain support from your family to help you through these dark times.

I wish you and your family the very best ~ take care!

it would be a SHAME to sell now since you're nearing payoff. I would talk with the bank about lowering the payments by refinancing if you can manage it. There ARE some costs in refinancing but it would be much cheaper by doing that than in moving and having to put down a security deposit on an apartment and the first months rent!!! So talk to the bank about refinancing -- this is the time to do it and you could still keep your house and have lower payments at the same time.

I hope it works out for you. Let us know what happens, ok? God bless and take care. Hugs, Lee

When I was in a deep depression, my pdoc and T told me not to make any life decisions.

We ended up moving from one rental to another, but I couldn't do any of it, I was a zombie. Family came from 8 hours away to help my husband. I think it would be a huge stress for you right now.

Also, the house is almost paid off. Just think how much easier it will be without a mortgage in the near future. Can you refinance?
