I have had depression for 30 some yrs. now. This depression is with me all the time I understand some people that have it will not have it everyday but mine is here everyday. I have tried numerous meds with side effects to only have to go off of them with more side effects it is like a merry go round oh yes & also numerous hospital stays. I am at the end of my rope with only wanting some peace & happiness & relief. I do not know what else to do? Has anyone else been like this where there is nothing left to try? What does a person do?

I completly understand how you feel, I have only been suffering from this for about 5 years. Absolutly nothing is enjoyable to me. My meds have been switched many times, I could sleep for days just to not feel how I feel, I am hoping this site will help me to be able to talk to other that can relate and I need to see a pych. but just calling takes so much effort. I just want to love life because its aa gift and I just dont know how either. The dr says I will never be the person I once was and I vaguely remember some of those happy times and I felt alive. Are you on different meds?

I'm sorry things are so tough for you. I've been depressed off and on since I was 14(I'm 63). For me the meds make a big difference. I can control the anxiety better and think more clearly. Have you heard of a medicine called Agomelatine.? It helps my insomnia, anxiety and depression. I'm also on mood stabilizer--Quetiapine Fulmarate, and - Lamotrigine. I add alprazoline if I get panicky. I know it's a lot of medicine but it works and I can function so much better.
Keep posting here, read other peoples' posts and let us know how you are doing. I really hope you find something good today.

Someone may have suggested the following:
See a psychotherapist
See a therapist
Join a support group
Keep a helpline number handy

Stay strong

Hello pacots, I believe that I, too, have tried every available antidepressant. Most of them seem to have no effect or the effect wore off after a few years. I really don't like the side effects of what I am taking: I sweat all the time and I have insomnia with my current med so I have to take a sleeping pill with it. I have tried, with psychiatrist and counselor cooperation, going off all my meds but with disastrous results that I care not to repeat. I know all too well that while I loathe the side effects, I am still better off on my meds. Even though I am somewhat better off on my current antidepressant, I am still not close to being an independent, "functional" person.

Have you tried, with psychiatrist prescribing of course, combining medications to help with your depression? I have read that some people will respond better to multiple prescriptions rather than just a single one. I don't know what the combination would be, but a psychiatrist should be willing to have you try something like that.
