Hi, for the past several years I have been stable on lamictal and cymbalta for my bipolar. I am writing in the depression section because I have only had one manic episode in my life. It just seems I have recurring major depression to me, but that was my diagnosis. I have been in a depression since December. It was as if my meds just stopped working. I toughed it out until February when I called my doctor and he put me on abilify in addition to the other 2 meds. When that didn't work he put me on Pristiq. When that didn't work he put me on Adderall. When that didn't work he doubled my lamictal. Now that is not working and I am more than frustrated. I have an appointment this week but I don't know if I can take one more med change. I have gotten more and more depressed over these months of trying all these meds and failing. I know I have to do something and I have to keep trying but nothing is working Also in the past I have been on prozac, zoloft, paxil, wellbutrin, effexor, lexapro, etc. and more. No success. Can anyone offer any suggestions? The only thing I have not tried is a MAOI and I think that is the next thing my doctor will put me on. Sorry for the long post thanks for reading, just frustrated here!

It sure sounds like you are doing your part ... staying the course, trying different meds, etc. I have no med suggestions but I wonder if some counseling might help ... at least some help with the frustration you are experiencing. Counseling and a support group are an ongoing part of my treatment plan (the best part, actually ...).

Hmmm... Has your doctor ruled out any other medical condition not depression/bipolar that might be contributing to the depression or presenting as depression?

For what it's worth----- it took 2 years for my psychiatrist to find the right meds for me.
Anyway, good luck

I don't know what advice to give you. I am still trying to find the right medication myself. Have you tried these: Sodium Vaproate (Epilim), Seroquel, (mood stabilizers) Citalopram (antidepressant) ? I have tried Cymbalta, (not for long though) Pristiq (gave me bad indigestion), Lexapro, Effexor XR, I haven't tried all the meds around but like you I have to keep searching until I find the right one. The side effects are the things which freak me out the most.

That's all my pdoc tells me all the time, It takes time. You have been through a whole lot of meds and I suppose everybody is different and reacts differently to meds. I wish you well and hope in the near future there is a good "cocktail" that will suit you. Best wishes

Medications don't always work, and I'm afraid, some of them can be addictive and make your problem worse.. Meds only work if your depressions or bipolar behaviors happen due to hormonal misbalance. But maybe it's just some episodes in your past or present life that are causing that.. Have you tried a counselor who will just help you go through your life situations in confidential conversations and maybe you can find reasons for your depressed moods and fix them that way..

Have you tried any older tricyclic antidepressants? I know that Doxepin worked really well for me for a time. A list of tricyclic's can be found here.

just my 2 cents

Every medication has its side effect, and you have been on so many in the past couple of years. It’s best for you to find out the real reason for your depression. It can be anything from anger to daily life stress. Thus if you want professional help then you can check out Valley Anger Management. They offer several classes that can be of a great help for you.

I have been through the same phase when I tried one pill after the other. At the end of the day I found relief through therapy they can be a bit expensive but it’s a small price to pay. Valley anger management is one of the organizations that helps individuals like us deal with our problems in a better way.
