Can someone please answer my question?

I'm currently not in a "good place" right now :**((( and am currently having VERY negative thoughts. My GP gave me diazepam tablets to take when my anxiety gets really bad... I've never taken these before, will they temporarily level me before I feel like acting out these negative thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Hi, what you have is a benzodiazepene and it may not be the best med for you since it's highly addictive. You could try one tablet and see if it's something you want to get involved with.

Thank you Angelique67.
Obviously I don't want to be addicted to anything... But will it calm me right now? I'm sorry if I sound ignorant I'm just not used to taking different meds? And I find that online sites can be contradictory at times.

I've found it a little helpful for anxiety, but not depression. It could calm you down enough to take a nap...

Yes, it should calm you. It's also known as Valium if you've ever heard of it. It may make you a bit drowsy so I wouldn't drive on it yet. But you have to be so careful with benzos because you can be hooked before you know it. Good luck.

I take 10mg 3x daily and though it helps overall, it isn't as fast-acting as Xanax. So keep that in mind. I'm taking it for anxiety (plus there is an extra muscle relaxing bit). If my area didn't restrict such things, I would personally take the Diazepam regularly and then take Xanax as needed becauseI truly am that anxious.

I was prescribed diazepam about a month ago for severe anxiety to the point of being suicidal. I was prescribed 2 to 4mg, 2x daily and given 14 tablets. So far I've only needed 3 doses to get my anxiety under control and keep it there. The first two doses were within 24 hours and the third dose was about a week later. I was a bit drowsy each time, I was relieved to get some sleep and just being out of it helped a lot. I did notice the third time that my mood dropped significantly, benzos aren't really ideal when suffering from depression but if you are so anxious that you are not safe then it is a trade off that is probably worth making. As you are in the UK, you were probably only prescribed a few low dose pills, like I was, so the risk of addiction is kept to a minimum.

I take it for anxiety which it can certainly help, and I have noticed when I having more intense depressive thoughts and am concerned with like harming myself somehow taking it can help calm things.

But it doesn't exactly reduce all the depressive symptoms or anything, but can mellow you out.

Thank you that really helps. That's what I wanted to know. I know it doesn't help depression I'm already on anti-depressants for that. And just wanted to know if it would give me a slight calmed state.
Thank you everyone that has responded with your own experiences that has helped Diazepam?

On a positive I rode through it yesterday so didn't need to try it.

I suffer from major recurring depression and am also a drug addict/alcoholic in recovery. My psychiatrist has allotted me a small amount of benzos specifically for cases like the one you are describing. If I get to the point where the feelings of hopelessness, despair, guilt, and worthlessness become so great that harming myself seems like a viable option, I take a couple benzos, call a safe person (someone who's supportive of you and aware of your condition), and I stay on the phone with them until someone can get to me. This exact scenario has saved my life and kept me from hospitalization multiple times. They are not a long term solution because of the risk of dependency, but they can be an excellent tool to help you just make it to tomorrow. Best of luck my dear. You are not alone.

I take klonopin which is similar to valium. both are benzodiazapines. I would advise taking only on an as needed basis. I am right now cutting my dose back which isn't real high.

They are highly effective for anxiety. Probably won't help depression unless the anxiety is causing the depression. In my case depression causes anxiety but the anxiety makes the depression worse. It was horrible anxiety and a vicious cycle so I decided on a benzo despite the risks.

You should educate yourself on the risks and use it minimally.

Check out some of the posts by me and others dealing with our horrible experiences trying to go through withdrawal after being forced off our benzos. Not a good time. Yes, benzos work brilliantly but then some moron will possibly force you off of them and you'll be sent into hell.
