Saw T yesterday about my increasing depression. It seems to be linked to my insomnia. She made new (?) suggestions. First no caffeine after lunch. Drink herbal tea to help me sleep. Spend at least 30 minutes per day doing something fun. Start looking for social events to get involved with. Stick with a nutritious diet.

Hi Seekersinking, yes I think it was zinco (????) on here not so long ago who really stressed how important sleep was. And of course that makes sense in that if you're physically drained then that's going to have a big impact on you emotionally too.
Hopefully zinco???? or someone else who can go into more detail will be around soon but for now here's some links which may hopefully help with getting back a little better sleeping pattern (???) alongside your T's advise:
Can?t Sleep? Causes, Cures, and Treatments for Insomnia
Insomnia? 42 Simple Tips to Help You Get to Sleep - Insomnia treatment, cures
How to Overcome Insomnia, Sleeping Problems and Sleep Disorders
Naturally it's worth keeping on in addressing the depression just as much as well though, as depression and sleeplessness are both going to impact on each other.
Hoping something in the links might help just a little!!
Best wishes
Alison
Thanks for this!

Those all sound like great recommendations. I know my depression and insomnia feed off eachother. I ended up needing sleep medication because of ptsd that would cause me to panic at night.

Getting a good night's sleep always helps my mood.
Thanks for this!

Much easier said then done when you depressed. I decided to drink decaf coffee starting today. Very hard for me because I am a recovering addict but still an addict. And the addict in me says whats the point of decaf. lol
For me mainly because my new meds are getting me all wired.

The social events and do something happy is really hard when you are severely happy.

Yeah I believe it was me that was talking about it to GenCat. It is true that not getting a good nights sleep can mess you all up. Even if you don't have depression it can mess you all up but with depression it is that much worse.

My problem has always been that the SSRI's have always really messed up my sleep. Doesn't really matter why....

I take melatonin to help. That is a hormone that regulates sleep and circadian rhythms and seasonal rhythms. Depression can cause melatonin to get all messed up. Like last winter when in a bad depression I would stay up all night and sleep all day.

For me because of the SSRI thing messing up my sleep I use meds. I have taken Trazadone alot in the past. Right now I am taking Remeron and a low dose of Klonopin for sleep. I get 4 good hours out of that then I start waking up again. Dream like crazy, wake up, get up for ten minutes, go back to sleep dream like crazy, wake up, get up, go back to sleep. The problem is not getting enough stage 4 and 5 that real deep deep sleep. That will mess you up. I have often taken long naps in the afternoon to catch up on that deep sleep.

Meds
Remeron- best one for it I think. It is an AD kind of in its own class. For me harmless no side effects. Only works for four hours for me.

Trazadone - knocks you out right away. For me it only worked for four hours. Some people complain they wake up feeling hungover.

Benzo's - No sense going that route. the only reason i take klonopin is for severe anxiety but since I am taking it it might as well help for sleep. still only helps me for four hours.

Ambien- Only meant to be used short term to get the natural cycle back. Has a whole bunch of issues with it.

Melatonin - supplement. sleep regulating hormone.

Chamomile Sleepy time tea - drink tons of it in the evening it works.

Valerian Root - never tried it.

Meditation

Relaxation techniques

No caffiene

Don't let yourself get into that staying up all night sleeping all day thing. very hard for me.

Lots of info out there on sleep hygiene and what you can do.

Hi Everyone. I am revisiting this thread as I am onto something new. An online study I did suggested sugar has a big impact on depression. I have not bought a sack of sugar in like 30 years. However, I do use food items which contain sugar. Since I started my "sugar vigil" about three weeks ago I have had only one major plunge into deep depression. I am slowly working on going sugar free.
Has anyone else gone sugar free and noticed benefits?

8888.....Melatonin will help sometimes. It is hit and miss.

I am still working on other things to help with depression & insomnia. Trying to learn meditation and yoga. Still feel like a novice at both.
