I'm so scared to talk to my shrink about my self harm and suicidal thoughts? How do I tell him?!

The last time I had to admit to a Psychologist I was in danger from myself was 2012. I had to tell my GP first and he rushed me into emergency Counselling.

All I can advise is that you talk a few deep breaths and lay it out as calmly as you possibly can. That's what I did, told him how I wanted to be addressed then laid it on the line. He wasn't shocked, nor taken aback, we just started dealing with my many issues straight away.

If you feel you cannot voice the words, write them down and pass them to your Therapist. Explain it's too hard to say it out loud.

Whatever you do, remember your Therapist is there to listen and help you get to the root cause and overcome your issues. Stay calm and express yourself well, think of us all supporting you.

Dave.

Everyone has suicide thoughts at times . Just don't have plans laid out . It just means you are thinking you are overwhelmed and out of control . But if you had the means right in front of yourself most of us would choose no . I know at times I'm in unbearable pain I think . But what would that do to the people around me . Is it going to be a bigger problem for some of them . Can I really fix anything if I would .
In most cases the depression lifts and your thinking gets clearer . We all make mistakes we don't think we could live with but time and clearer days proves us wrong .
Certainly put it out there , talk it out without pushing the panic button . Don't try to scare your support person but ask yourself first would I really do that now. Be calm and assure them you want to try to stop feeling that bad . Be open to try a reasonable amount of drugs and time to get feeling better . The drugs take 4 to 8 weeks to have some good effects . My last go round took a year to fall in on me even though I thought it was sudden trauma. I have been working on getting better for 10 weeks and it is working .
I chose the older drugs because I can't take the newer ones. No ssri's for
me. I take a very little xanax when the anxiety starts on me so it won't get a hold of me . I accept the wave and I don't react to it I float thru it . It can't hurt me if I don't fear it . I believe in claire weekes on you tube , she gave me these tools .
Of course I'm just another patient , Not a caregiver .
Good luck on your journey . I only take 50mg of amitripline at bedtime .

Any mental health professional who has been working for a while has probably heard it all. Some younger people think that by admitting sui or SI thoughts will get them thrown in a locked rubber room and pumped full of drugs. This is not true.

Your MH worker will understand and try to help you figure out how to cope with life and develop alternatives to harmful thoughts or activities. Don't be afraid to reveal what is really going on inside you. Typically they won't even advise inpatient unless hurting yourself or someone else is imminent without intervention.

Good luck to you and remember to be kind to yourself.

Oh, and a lot of people find it easier to write their thoughts out and let their T read it.

I went through this a few years ago with the suicidal ideation, as they already knew about the self harm aspect (which I didn't actually tell them about). To me it is always hard to open up to someone with something that feels so personal and taboo. Especially my shrink, because I have a tendency to want to make everyone think that everything is perfectly OK when it is not. I don't remember exactly how I said it, but I am glad that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to tell him.

Anyway, my best advice is to just tell him to the extent that you feel you are able to. In my experience, any session usually starts with "how have you been". This allows for you to begin by saying how you have not been feeling great or have been having a hard time. Usually they will inquire about it and ask follow up questions, which provides the perfect opportunity for you to open up and tell him. It is a hard situation to deal with, but it is important to speak with someone about it.

While this advice is easier said than done, don't be afraid or ashamed to reach out. Don't forget that he is there to help you. He has been trained to listen, be nonjudgmental, and provide assistance to people in our situation.
Thanks for this!

They are scary thoughts and it is unsettling to talk about them, do not worry, we have all been there. I am very introverted and have Anxiety and Panic Attacks, only the fear drove me to open up - I was still just rational enough to know I did not want to carry through.

In your case I think it a very good idea to write your thoughts down. Do not ramble, try to stick to cold facts, they will make more of the impression you want to convey, someone rational needing help with this issue driven by Depression.

In the meantime, keep talking here, we are listening.

Dave.

be opeh and honest. He/she is there to help with your issues , not judge you. I know it's scary, but the first step is the hardest.
