Today at work somebody told me 'oh no you're just like that guy'...sort of joking but totally not joking. I said 'how so', feigning ignorance. He paused for a moment - likely realizing that the truth of the comment was too harsh to elaborate - and said 'you're a kook!' and laughed it off.

He's right of course...if I was suddenly in the news as the perpetrator of a mass shooting, my acquaintances would likely say 'well **** obviously, of course, how did we not see this coming'.

Fortunately I would never do that...I've long ago accepted that it's me, not them and when the time comes it'll just be me, not them.

I don' think your co-worker's joke was funny. I think it was mean, and inappropriate in general.

I agree with the last two posters. I just happen to watch a video today on "harassment" and it featured things other than sexual. What had happened with you can be considered harassment. I remembered one time, a long time ago, there was a shooter at Virginia Tech. One guy at work was saying that he was scared because he may get shot by one of the geeks at work. He was a jerk. I reported him.

I'm glad you know it's not true. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I don't know your story, but even so I deeply truly believe that there is nothing wrong with you. You get to have a history and a story and still be perfect in my mind.

And the guy who shot up Vegas, I imagine that in his life he was suffering on a level that none of us can understand. To believe what he had to believe to do that, and to see the world in the way he had to be seeing the world, it's really tragic to me. His inner world had to be a really horrific place to be living. I'm so sorry that those innocent people were killed, and I'm also sorry that this guy's one chance at living was so violent and ended so tragically.

I learned some stuff about my depression and how to change my thoughts. If you ever want to talk about anything, pm me.

I agree with the other posters. It wasn't funny at all. It was totally inappropriate. Be your wonderful self. There is nothing wrong with you. Sending big hugs.

Oh it's right on the money, except that I have no intention of taking anyone with me. And really this has been my life for 40+ years...mocked and s*** on relentlessly, often in the guise of a joke that is totally not a joke.

It's actually gotten quite a bit worse in the last few months due to this phenomenon.
