Lately I have been suffering from almost daily "crying spells", periods of time when I feel overwhelming sadness and can't stop myself from balling my eyes out for a couple of hours. During these horrible "down times", I feel very panicked and tend to always reach out to my parents for help- only to soon realize that there really is no way they can help- the feeling won't go away. This is really starting to worry me, as I have just started a new job and am quite paranoid that one of these "spells" may hit me during work and all hell will break loose. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cope during these horrible times?

Try to calmly let them happen. Don't judge them or yourself. See if things come to mind when you're in this more relaxed state. What comes to mind can help you understand where the starting point of this is. The tears are a reaction to something. See if you can discover what that is. Often it's a fear of some kind. .. Fear of being alone, fear of failure, fear of independence, and so on.

It's a mystery to be explored!

I hope you feel much better soon.

how to deal with crying spells? how to deal with crying spells?

I think you will probably find you have the crying spells when you are "alone" and "able" to have them fairly safely, without being discovered. Your head and body are working together to make sure you have them when it is "best" for you/them. When I figured that out with my crying it made me much more comfortable and relaxed that I could deal with them, that my body was on my side and I could do as Echoes suggests and look at what the crying was "for".
